About Prince Louie
This gorgeous boy is now seeking his forever home. Introducing Prince Louie or just Prince for short. He is a very excitable Lab x (possibly kelpie) and is 3 years old although often acts like a puppy. He’s a solid medium sized dog who currently weighs 33kg.
Prince is an extremely excited and happy boy who is very affectionate. All he wants is to be by your side no matter where you are. His favourite things include, pats, cuddles, walks and food.
OBEDIENCE
Prince came to us with absolutely no obedience training. He jumped, he barked and got very excited very quickly. In three weeks he has learnt sit, drop, wait and gentle when taking food from your hands. Prince has learnt relatively fast but does require firm consistency and patience and lots of treats! He responds to his name when called and hasn’t shown any signs of destructive behaviour at all.
ENRICHMENT
Initially Prince struggled to settle when inside the house. He would pace around the house as if he was looking for someone/something. He’s not toilet trained so when he’s walking around the house sniffing it would be wise to let him out.
Over time and with patience Prince can now settle in his bed inside with you nearby however, he will get up and follow you if you leave the room.
Prince is most happy being an outside dog. He loves a good bone, dried meat chew or dentastick to pass the time. He isn’t really interested in toys so doesn’t understand fetch or tug of war, but if provided toys he has been seen to explore them in his own time. He has shown most interest in a toy pig that grunts when you squeeze it.
Prince is a very vocal boy and does have a tendency to bark. He mostly barks at things because he’s in a new environment and isn’t sure of his surroundings yet. He also barks out of excitement and Prince finds a lot of things in life exciting. He is easily startled at loud noises (trucks, doors slamming, construction sites etc) but gets over it quickly and moves on. We have found that the more comfortable Prince gets, the less he barks. Prince doesn’t bark during the night while you’re sleeping. He would make an excellent guard dog and will let you know when people pass by the front gate.
SOCIALISATION
Prince has not shown any dog aggression when tested with another submissive dog but he does play rough and loud. Prince can make sounds that may seem like he’s aggressive but it’s really just his excitement coming out. We think it would be best for Prince if he was an only dog in the house at this point mainly due to his boisterous and excitable play with others
When out on a walk, Prince can pull towards other dogs and people but not in an aggressive way. He’s just eager to meet everyone. He can be walked on either his collar or harness. Putting Prince’s harness on is one of his favourite games. He likes to challenge you by rolling around on the ground while you try to put it on.
When new people come to visit your home, Prince can get a bit excited. Sometimes he will jump out of excitement but is learning that this is not acceptable which he has improved on. Turning your back to him helps Prince learn this.
Due to Prince’s solid size he is unaware of just how stocky he is. When playing, he can sometimes throw his weight around so small children definitely wouldn’t suit him. Teenagers and above he would love!
FOOD
Prince loves his food but is a gentleman when eating. He does not scoff his food and will sit before eating. Prince will eat just about anything you put in front of him. In his foster home, he is being fed Black Hawk dry food and Prime loaf (all flavours). He gets fed at dinner time every night. He has had canned dog food with no problem and naturally loves any leftovers from his humans.
Prince loves treats. Dried meat straps, pigs ears, schmacko’s and dentastix are all his favourites.
