Groucho is energetic, intelligent and willing to learn. He knows and obeys many commands and would benefit from an owner who will teach him many more. He is affectionate and loves to play and cuddle and be with his owner all of the time. He is a gentle, patient dog, alert to everything you are doing.
He is house-trained but somewhat anxious of the dog door. He can hang on for hours! He is learning that the dog door’s not so scary.
Groucho can be picky with food. He has a sensitive stomach but will not always eat the dry food that is recommended for him.
He loves his walks and is good on the lead. He might pull a bit on a short lead because he is excited by the smells. He walks well on the extender lead. He ignores other dogs unless they approach him. He is wary and will growl, snap at them and attack after an initial sniff. He is also wary of new people.
Groucho does not bark much. At home he might bark when he hears other dogs, when he runs into the back yard, or when the doorbell rings but barking is not a problem. However, he does growl when he hears sounds he can’t identify and needs to be reassured that it is nothing to be alarmed about.
So, Groucho does have some anxiety problems. He is wary of new people and new situations. In the past he was jealous and possessive of his owner and was on medication. He would growl at, snap at and even bite visitors and sometimes other family members.
Groucho would suit a single person or couple with no young children. He could get along with another dog with very firm training and the right dog. He has not been tested with cats. Consequently, no other pets is recommended. His new owner must know how to work with Groucho to avoid his possessiveness from developing and how to control his nervous aggression. With strong boundaries on his behaviour he will be loving and fun to be with.
