About Laika
Meet Laika, our beautiful 4 year old, pure-bred female German shepherd. She has come from a loving family whose circumstances have changed, and who want a better life for their much loved pet. SHE DOES HAVE SEPARATION ANXIETY ISSUES AND NEEDS SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS WHAT HER REQUIREMENTS WILL BE.
Laika is de-sexed, fully vaccinated, worm treated, microchipped.
Laika, like all German shepherds has a thick, double-layered coat that require weekly brushing to combat frequent shedding. Like many breeds, German shepherds shed profusely and you’ll want to brush once or even twice a day to keep the coat in good condition. Regular brushing is also a good time to check for things like coat sheen (dull hair can mean a lack of nutrients in diet), nail length, and ear and dental health.
German shepherds are very intelligent, high-energy, moderately active dogs which need a good amount of mental stimulation and exercise daily, it’s important to continue socialising and training your German shepherd. They have a willingness to learn and an eagerness to have a purpose. They can become overprotective of their family and territory, especially if not socialised correctly. They are not always inclined to become immediate friends with strangers. German Shepherds are highly intelligent and obedient, as well as protective of their owners. A well-adjusted German shepherd will be patient and gentle.
As mentioned above, they are smart and courageous. There’s one thing they hate the most, and that is being at home alone for a long time. Without putting their intelligence to work, keeping them alone, with or without friends and lack of exercise are the reasons that boredom and frustration kicks in. This breed, when ignored by his family, will express his energy in other ways that you may not like, such as barking.
We would like Laika to have another dog, similar to her size, (another German shepherd would be perfect) for company. She DEFINITELY is not able to be around smaller animals or cats! She has been an indoors/outdoors dog and was very well behaved inside the house. She will require a well-fenced, secure yard with plenty of room to run around in.
LAIKA MAY NEED SOME MEDICATIION TO HELP WITH HER SEPARATION ISSUES. SHE WILL BE ASSESSED BY OUR VET FOR ADVICE.

.......................
Midcoast Dog Rescue Inc. is trying to expand its foster carer network so that we can help more dogs in need. This is a very rewarding experience and suits a variety of people. Some people, for whatever reason, are unable to make a permanent commitment to a dog, a commitment which can last for up to 15 years. Others use the fostering experience as an interim measure before committing to permanently owning a dog. If you think you could be interested in becoming a foster carer, either on a long-term or a short-term basis, and would like more information please contact Nigel on 6584 4992 or Wendy on 6584 7027.
