Herbie is very sweet but does need an understanding home. He is a very anxious little boy and quite reactive to noises around and is very very vocal when someone is at the door. He will try to play with other dogs who are familiar to him but then gets skittish and will start barking and carrying on. He may adapt with a quiet placid small dog who just shrugs and walks away.
He does like his people around all the time and will get very upset when you leave so he will not suit a working family. He will benefit from a quiet environment with a regular routine. He is a resource guarder and if you try to take that scrunchie from him he will try to nip you, but if you offer a treat he will drop and take the treat instead.
He is very food motivated.
He is nervous around new people but does settle fairly quickly although he really does not like being patted on the top of his head. Herbie needs controlled interactions with strangers and touch desensitization.
Herbie will paw at your arm to be patted or played with (fairly gently but claws are claws). He happily plays with chew toys by himself - throwing them and kicking them, He likes the idea of fetch but doesn't return whatever you throw for him as he likes to be chased. He is quite a clever dog and will benefit from someone interested in enrichment games with him.
Herbie lives with a grumpy old cat and if they have an altercation the cat wins. Herbie tries to convince the cat to play with him by being bouncy and sometimes barking. He will try to push his way in if the cat is given attention . He doesn't try to bite as he has learned that cats have sharp claws! For this reason we don’t think Herbie should be placed with a cat.
He likes to test you sometimes by standing in the backyard at midnight and barking. Does he really hear anything or is he just wanting your attention? Herbie is a little of a mixed bag at present but in the right home we know he will flourish and his socialization skills will improve. He will need that understanding couple though. We do feel he would be better in an adult home with more than one person so he does not focus on just the one person.
Herbie is waiting.

Adoption details
We are a community fostercare network, not a shelter, and our dogs and cats are cared for in private homes. Note that we are very careful where we rehome our dogs and cats and we have an intensive process. If you want a quick turnaround we are not the group for you. If you seem like a good match for the dog of your choice we will organise a telephone chat, a meet and greet and a property check. We offer a six-week full refund, free assistance for six weeks for any issues, and a lifetime takeback policy with a fifty percent refund of the adoption fee, and of course an invitation to our adopters’ Christmas party.
We care for our dogs and cats and we want you to as well. We know that genuine applicants have no trouble with this process and understand that if we refuse you a dog or cat, it is because you are not the best match for that pet.
Our commitment to the dogs and cats in our care is total and we treat each one as if we are passing on a family pet. This may not suit you so we point out that there are equally great dogs and cats available in pounds, shelters and with other rescue groups.
