About Derby (Australian Capital Territory)
We are currently taking expressions of interest for Derby - the link for the non-binding EOI form is here: https://www.4lyfe.org.au/adoption-application. Please do NOT use the giant green petrescue button to make an inquiry as your inquiry will not be processed. Derby will not be available for re-homing outside of the ACT.
Derby is a young pup who is very smart and affectionate. He is a Kelpie / Jack Russell Terrier / other mix and weighed 5.5 kg as at a vet visit of 3 June 2021.
As you would expect from his breed mix, he is alert, clever and trainable. Derby knows his name, can sit and shake hands. He has good mealtime manners and to date has displayed no signs of resource guarding or possessiveness about toys or food. He is currently learning 'stay' and drop. He travels well in a car, both in a harness or in a dog crate.
Derby is (mostly) house-trained (can use a dog door and know how to take himself outside to toilet), crate-trained and sleeps quietly through the night. He will even let you sleep in in the mornings. He has the occasional house-training lapse when there's bad weather but that's understandable in a puppy this young.
Derby lives with three older dogs and is very dog friendly and loves people. He is good with children, although would do best with kids who know how to be calm around a dog. He responds well to correction from humans and is very submissive with the other dogs if they tell him off. He has not yet been exposed to cats or other animals. See his socialisation checklist here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/sdgzrpiaumpf2mp/02%20Derby%20Socialisation%20Checklist.pdf?dl=0
Although like most puppies, he gets very excited with new people and new situations, overall he is very calm for a puppy and definitely has an off-switch. He is a very playful puppy, loves playing with toys, loves balls and enjoys playing tug with humans and other dogs. He loves cuddles and is quite smoochy for a Kelpie mix.
Although Derby would probably be fine as a solo dog, he is very sociable and would love doggy company or at least plenty of human company during the day. Given his breed mix, he will need intellectual stimulation and enrichment and will need ongoing training and boundaries from his humans. He would be best off in a home that will not leave him alone every day for long periods of time. Although as a puppy he looks very cute, working dogs like Derby need ongoing intellectual stimulation (not just physical exercise) and company or they will create their own fun and mischief.
Please note that Derby is still a puppy so should not do any hard exercise (long walks, jogging, alongside a bicycle, frisbee) until he is at least around 14 months old and he has finished growing. Until then, he should do short walks and gentle exercise only. Accordingly, if you need an exercise buddy right now, Derby will not be the right fit for you. If you have the patience to wait, he will be a fabulous training buddy.
You can follow his progress in foster care here: https://koalathebear.dreamwidth.org/tag/Derby where we have posted more photographs of Derby.
Before you submit a non-binding EOI, please make sure you have read Derby's profile carefully. As mentioned below, we do not rehome our animals on a "first in best dressed" basis but based on the "best fit", depending on a foster dog's personality and requirements and an applicant's preference and lifestyle. Please do not request to meet Derby before you have submitted a non-binding EOI.
Medical notes
Derby is still due to receive his final set of vaccinations.
Derby is not yet desexed as he is too young. Adopters must pay a refundable desexing bond of $100 and sign a desexing contract as part of his adoption in which adopters agree an appropriate age at which he will be desexed at a nominated veterinary clinic.
