About Charlie
PLEASE NOTE THAT UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE UNABLE TO FLY OUR ANIMALS EITHER WITHIN WA OR INTERSTATE
NAME: Charlie
BEFORE SAFE ESPERANCE: Came to us as an owner surrender.
BREED: Kelpie
ASSETS: Easygoing, affectionate, friendly, laidback, and very sweet! Charlie is an absolute darling and loves everyone that she meets.
FAVOURITE THINGS: People! She loves to be around her people and loves cuddle time. She also likes chew toys.
ENDEARING FEATURES: She's very gentle and sweet natured, and is a delight to be around!
OTHER ANIMALS: She loves to be around other dogs and would be really happy to have a doggy companion in her new home. She is good around dog-savvy cats but will chase birds if allowed to.
GENERAL INFO: Charlie walks beautifully on the lead and rarely barks. She is mostly house-trained but has the odd accident when left alone. Her command training is coming along nicely and she knows most of the basics. She has been trialed as a working dog but is not suitable and would be happier as a pet.
HOME ESSENTIALS:
Exercise! Exercise! Exercise! Kelpies are bred to spend long days working, using their brains to solve problems, so have a strong drive to be active and mentally stimulated. If they are not working, they need help to use up that energy.
Enrichment Activities
They have very active minds & are super smart. Activities in the community include flyball, agility courses, herding & search & rescue. There are lots of enrichment activities you can provide at home, too. To work for their food every day instead of just being given it. You could make food puzzles, or hide treats to sniff out and find, give lovely big frozen blocks of stock or an ice block with a chicken wing in the middle. Maybe throw a soft type dog frisbee and games of fetch where you teach to bring and drop!
Training
Teach basic commands for any situation: sit, down, stay, come, down, no, stop & leave it. Practice them every day so your Kelpie is always primed to obey. Use positive reinforcement for training. Negative training may lead to fear. Reward with treats or pats. Don't punish but redirect ie if your Kelpie chews on something you don't want, take it away, but trade it for a chew toy. When training, be happy & excited.
Socialising
Socialise from the start introducing to people, places, animals, sounds & smells, this will give you an engaged and well adjusted dog.
Space
Charlie needs a well fenced, large secure yard with some grass and interesting things for her to sniff. A home on a farmlet or acreage would be great for her.
Charlie needs to be allowed to be inside or out as she chooses, to sleep inside at night and to be included as part of the family. She would go well with dog-savvy, gentle children over 6 years old and could live with a youngish doggy friend, after gentle introduction.
Do you have the time & energy levels to own a working dog? You will develop an amazing bond because of what you do together!
If Charlie sounds like the perfect girl for you, please send an enquiry and we'll be in touch soon.
