**PLEASE NOTE: adopting a puppy into your home is a huge commitment, and very demanding of your time. Puppies require daily exercise, positive socialisation with other people/dogs/puppies, grooming, training, playtime and cuddles. When applying, please consider your work hours, holidays, and personal commitments as puppies will need someone who is home for most of the day with regular focused input, especially in those first six months after adoption **
NAME: Beau
BEFORE SAFE ESPERANCE: Came to us as an owner surrender.
BREED: Terrier x Chihuahua
BREED TRAITS: Terriers come in all shapes and sizes and were bred for different reasons but many were for farm work or ratting. Today they are mainly companions. Terriers are generally high energy, very bright and quick to learn but can be stubborn. They have strong personalities and a sense of fun and want to be included in everything you do. Don't take on a terrier unless you really do want a companion.
Chihuahuas love to be with their people and are definitely companion dogs that do not like to be left alone, They are sensitive, but are dogs, and can be problematic if overindulged. They love their family but can be aloof or wary with strangers and other dogs so early socialisation is very important. They cannot tolerate cold or hot weather - they are not outside dogs. They are bright and willful but quick learners and will learn if you make it fun. Although small they have big personalities that can get them into trouble.
ENERGY LEVEL: Typical pup at the moment, plays, eats, poops and sleeps! He has a lively energy and down the line will need daily walks including mental stimulation.
ASSETS: He's friendly, outgoing, confident, affectionate, eager to please and very playful! He loves everyone and everything he meets. Beau is a beautiful special boy, full of character, a joy to have around and is an absolute darling!
FAVOURITE THINGS: He loves to play with toys, his favourites at the moment are a plastic dummy and a rubber ring with rope attached. He also loves playing chase and climbing all over the other dogs in his foster home. Once he's finished playing he'll happily cuddle up on the couch with his person. He's also a big fan of mealtimes and loves his food!
WORKING ON: Housetraining. It's early days so he will need continued guidance and persistent gentle signals to remind him to go outside to toilet. Expect some accidents while he's learning! He will also need lead and command training. Puppy school and ongoing training are a must for him.
BEAU NEEDS:
* An experienced home, where someone is around for most of the day on a permanent basis or can take him with them when they go out.
* An owner who will put in the time to train and socialise him. He will need to attend puppy school and we strongly recommend ongoing training into adulthood. Sensitive exposure to new people/dogs/places will create a well-rounded dog. He will need two good walks a day to keep him happy and he would love another youngish dog to play with.
* A well fenced, secure yard to run around in to burn off his playful energy, with lots of grass and interesting things for him to sniff.
* To be allowed to be inside or out as he chooses - he is small and not an outside dog. He must sleep inside at night and be included as part of the family. He would be great with gentle children (6+) who have had a good amount of exposure to dogs throughout their childhood.
If Beau sounds like the perfect fit for your family, please send in an enquiry and we will be in touch.
