About Lucy ~ 2.5yr Old Kelpie X(Pend. Adoption 8/8/21)
Lucy is a small Kelpie X. She is predominantly black with a bit of tan and is approximately 2 1/2 years old. Lucy is of a very timid nature so needs a very special family committed to helping Lucy in the early stages of her adoption.
Lucy is so timid that she is still weary of her carer, even though she has been in care for quite a while. She tends to trust older children over the age of 10 a lot more than adults. A quiet family with a quiet environment and no other pets is what she needs. I have spent countless hours sitting in the yard not approaching Lucy to help her feel safe in my presence.
Lucy has begun to play with toys but is unsure of the concept of fetch. She will chase a toy not knowing what to do with it when she gets to it. A tug-of-war game with a rope toy or a larger toy is the only thing she has really grasped at this stage. She is very interested in toys but unsure of them, especially when a new one is introduced.
Lucy tends to hide in her kennel so I have introduced a lot of enrichment activities to coax her out of the kennel. There is a Kong with peanut butter in it, a lick mat with wet dog food on it, boxes with treats hidden inside, toys with a hint of lavender, healthy treats scattered around the yard, and much more.
At this stage I have been unable to take Lucy for walks as she is fearful of the lead and has no understanding of walking around with it on. Getting Lucy ready to be able to walk on a lead is another commitment the family will need to be prepared for as in the future walking Lucy will be important.
Lucy’s new family will also need to commit to a transition process. She will not be able to come home with you straight away. Lucy’s new family will need to come and spend time with her at her current foster home to help her feel safe with the people she will be going home with. The length of this transition will be determined by Lucy’s behaviour.
Lucy is in foster care in Maryland, NSW (Lake Macquarie) and is available for local adoption
only as she needs a transition for adoption. For more information or to meet Lucy, please
