Lefty

Lefty is a 3.5-year-old male greyhound with a giant heart and an appetite to match.

After feeling a bit shy for his first few weeks in foster care, Lefty has decided he loves humans. His foster carers describe him as a sweet and friendly boy, with a lovely nature. Lefty’s favourite things in life are dental chews, food, long walks, the company of his humans, car rides, and sighing loudly when he doesn’t get his way. Ideally, Lefty will have a small yard or outdoor space in his new home. He’s a lazy boy but does love a game of fetch or to zoom around with his squeaky toys.

Lefty would like to be an only dog in his new home. He will happily walk past other dogs and ignore them but is not keen to interact or play. Further slow socialisation would be beneficial. Lefty enjoys going for a long walk each day and is great at walking on-leash.

Lefty needs a forever home with people around more often than not and is not suited to living with people who work full-time away from home. Lefty has only been left home alone for short periods so far (about an hour) and is usually distracted with a peanut butter Kong.

Lefty is quite food obsessed, and we believe this is a result of being underfed/malnourished prior to coming into care with Amazing Greys. He will counter-surf or steal any food lying around and will guard it if you try to take it from him. It is important that Lefty’s new home understands he will need ongoing patience, training, and management to learn to relax around food. He has learned that food on his human’s plates is not for him (although will steal food if it is unattended) and is learning to ‘trade up’ for higher value treats when he steals something. Lefty’s new home will need to be careful about not leaving food within reach and being able to block the kitchen off with baby gates would be useful.

Lefty is usually a sweet and gentle boy, but because he can still be a bit possessive about food, he is best suited to a home with adults, or with children who are teenage years and up.
