About Cooper
About Cooper – Special Needs (Vision Impaired Diabetic)
All About Me and My Unique Personality:
Cooper spent his life as the adored pet of a mature lady who sadly succumbed to an aggressive and rare cancer 12 months ago. Her daughter has been caring for him ever since but is struggling to meet Cooper's needs due to a marriage breakdown and medical problems in the family that have left Cooper physically well cared for but his lifestyle is lacking joy and fulfilment.
My Ideal Home:
Hi ideal home will be with a mature couple or single person who can dote on him and give him the one on one attention in a quiet home where he can be part of all daily activities.
He will need someone who is experienced at giving 12 hourly insulin injections (given currently 7.30 am and 7.30 pm while eating his dinner) or willing to learn.
He will also need someone who can appreciate that his blindness can mean he startles easily when touched unexpectedly. Unexpected pats on the head are not sensible and he may give a warning growl or nip in the direction of the unexpected movement.
Once he knows he is in a safe place surrounded by familiar smells and sounds he will blossom into a loving and friendly dog who is still active and keen for his daily walks.
His new owners will also need to be able to continue his prescription diet, currently Hills Prescription Diet WD.
What is Known About My Background:
Cooper has been in the one family all his life and a beloved pet. Sadly his owner passed away last Easter (2020) and his life has been turned upside down. His owner's partner had to return to the US six months later and Cooper was then sent to live with her daughter's family.
Cooper was diagnosed with diabetes about 3 years ago after he started bumping into things and his eyeballs appeared swollen. He has had quite a few vet visits which understandably now make him very anxious. That said, he takes his 2 daily injections without incident so long as he is given his needle while eating breakfast and dinner, one of his favourite pastimes. As a diabetic dog, those injections are critical to his wellbeing.
How Do I Interact with Kids, Dogs, Cats and Other Pets:
Cooper grew up with a cat and pretty much ignores them so would probably be fine with a confident cat that is not too skittish. While he likes other dogs he meets on walks and at the beach, he has not lived with another dog. He can be quite dominant especially with smaller dogs and does not take kindly to being snapped at for his unwanted mounting behaviour. Given his level of vision impairment it is probably best for him to be an only dog or matched with a mature submissive dog. A few meetings on neutral territory will be required if you wish to introduce Cooper to a family with an existing dog. Cooper is hyped up by the noisiness of boisterous young children and would be best in a mature home only that provides as close a match to the one he enjoyed for so many years or a family with older teenage children who can appreciate and model behaviour that does not startle him or torment him.
