About Oprah ~ 4 month old kitten (on trial 10/05/2021)
Oprah was born on the 2/12/20 and she is ready for a very special home, a very special someone! PLEASE read her profile carefully.
Little Oprah had a rough start to life, being found with her 2 brothers in an abandoned house when she was just 3 days old.
As a tiny kitten she thrived with her surrogate mother. For the first few weeks she gained weight and was developing into a healthy little girl.
Oprah’s problem began when she was first weaned. After every meal she would regurgitate her food and she slipped down hill very quickly. Many food combinations and feeding techniques were tried but nothing worked.
In desperation Oprah was taken to the vet, where she was diagnosed with a condition called “Persistent Right Aortic Arch”. This is an abnormality of the hearts blood vessel which result in the Oesophagus being compressed at the level of the heart. This prevents solid food from passing through to the stomach.
After many conversations with the experts, it was decided that Oprah should have surgery, to try to rectify the problem, however her prognosis wasn’t good.
Oprah was small and needed to gain weight before she could have surgery. To achieve this she was fed a liquid diet of wet food blended with kitten formula, five times a day.
After 14 weeks she had gained enough weight for the surgery, however in the light of how well and healthy she is and in consultation with the vets, it was decided not to go ahead with the surgery. It was just too risky and he chance of surviving the surgery was slim. The decision not to operate was an agonising one, but to take away her happiness and beautiful life, was something we couldn’t do.
Oprah is a happy healthy little girl. Unfortunately, this condition doesn’t go away, so she will always require special care. Unless you were told, you would never know she has a problem. Oprah may live happily for years if her feeding regime remains the same, but she may regress and need surgery at a later date. Unfortunately the older she gets the less likelihood of successful surgery.
Oprah is active and adventurous, she is very affectionate and loves to be cuddled, always seeking you out for a nap on your knee. She loves to play with her toys and chase her furry friends around the house.
Oprah’s new parents/parent needs to be someone who is home most of the time to prepare and supervise her meals. She is fed 4 to 5 smaller meals a day. Her food must be blended, then strained and mixed with kitten formula so it doesn’t have any lumps. If you have other pets they must be fed separately, otherwise Oprah will eat their food, only to vomit it straight back up again. Very distressing. Eating normal food will never be an option for her.
Her owners must be 100% committed to maintaining her feeding regime, someone who has the time, love and patience for this sweet little girl. It is a big responsibility, but believe me she is worth the effort, she will steal your heart away.
Unfortunately we cannot predict Oprah’s future. We are keeping positive thoughts that she will continue to thrive and have many happy years ahead of her.
Oprah currently lives with a cat friendly dog and 2 adult cats. She is confident enough to live with children but we feel teenage children would be better suited so there is no risk of her being fed things she shouldn’t.
She must be an inside girl and has been exposed to an outdoor cat enclsure so would be great if you have one. She is in care with her foster mum in Waratah, Newcastle. If interested, please complete the below DRN questionnaire.
She is now desexed, microchipped and vaccinated. Her adoption fee is $250. We know there is a special someone out there willing to give this beautiful kitten the life she deserves.
Medical notes
Oprah has a condition called “Persistent Right Aortic Arch”. This is an abnormality of the hearts blood vessel which result in the Oesophagus being compressed at the level of the heart. This prevents solid food from passing through to the stomach. She will need to be fed a liquid diet for the rest of her life.
