Doris is the gentlest, easiest going, mildest-mannered dog her carer has ever met. She is completely and reliably house-trained, never had an accident - very dedicated to going out on the grass.
She is very food motivated, knows how to sit, and is working on the down and stay commands. She walks beautifully on the lead – happy to stroll along beside or behind you - doesn't pull. When dogs in yards bark at us, she looks but keeps walking. She meets other dogs beautifully - low tail wag and a sniff. At the vet she came face-to-face with two excited dogs very suddenly, and she met them quietly, no issue. So far there have been no concerns with her and dogs. She also gets along with her foster family's cats perfectly. She was mildly curious at first, now they’re just part of the scenery, she ignores them.
She greets men and women the same way – gentle tail wagging and a sniff. I'm especially impressed with how non-reactive she is when someone comes to the door. Her ears perk up but she doesn't run to the door or bark, just waits for me to answer the door and gives the new person a sniff when they approach her. Perfect door behavior.
Other things about Doris? She sleeps through severe thunder and rainstorms, unbothered by the loud noises. She doesn't seem to be scared of men, or trucks, or hand shy or foot shy. She doesn't bark or dig. Everyone who's met her comments on how gentle and mild she is. She doesn't beg for food when we're eating.
She loves to be near you – happy to be your shadow, padding around behind you. She is extraordinarily calm – no problem with people touching her ears, feet and mouth. She stands patiently when it’s bath time. She loves to nap – it’s what she does most of the day. More than anything, she just wants to be with you. Her most favourite thing is to nap on the couch, next to a person. She likes a short, slow walk in the morning and evening to do her business, but doesn’t seem keen on long or fast walks.
Doris is learning to get in the car, but with training and encouragement, she’ll learn car rides can be fun. We've left her on her own for a few hours at a time. When she's locked in the crate, she is pretty unsettled, but when she has free run of the house, she relaxes and naps on the couch until you get home.
Doris would be perfect for someone who is around most of the time – she’d make a fantastic companion dog for a retiree or someone who wants a buddy. She is a warm and gentle presence in our home, and could be in yours too.
