Hihi is seeking a very special forever home. He has both temporary medical and ongoing behavioural needs that make him extra quirky. Please only apply if you have read and match ALL requirements.
There's a lot to say about Hihi. He is sweet, loving, cuddlesome, a clown, and he looks at you ever so adoringly. He bonds fast and hard to his human. He is also protective, anxious when separated from you, and when triggered into an uncomfortable situation he can growl and bite.
Hihi has had one corrective surgery on his luxating patellas, and will require his other leg to be done. First he needs to build up the strength again in his repaired leg. We do not wish to keep him from finding his family during this, so are seeking a confident home that are able to take over his recovery with our support.
Hihi can either ignore other dogs or they can trigger him, therefore he needs to be the centre of attention in your life. He is not the type of dog to take off lead anywhere, or be social with. He will love you, and you will be the only world he cares about. He travels well in the car and is keen for adventures. His happy place is on your knee or in your arms.
Some of Hihi's challenges, which we are still establishing if habitual, pain related or both are:
- licking the air
- panting excessively and drooling when anxious
- gnawing at whatever is separating him from his human
- barking at strangers
- growling, barking and biting when in an uncomfortable situation. He does tend to warn first.
Some identified uncomfortable situations:
- removing his food bowl when unfinished
- excessive touching of sensitive areas ie around eyes, face, sore legs
- when other animals enter his personal space or go near his human
- being told no
- attending the vet and groomers (he requires medicinal sedation for these)
- busy, loud environments
When with his human and noone is bothering him he is the most gorgeous boy in the world. He really likes to be close to you. Hihi nuzzles into your neck and is content. He just wants to be with you and snuggle in.
If you think you have a Hihi shaped hole in your life and wish to discuss him further, please apply. He craves love and affection and will fill your heart with joy.
