About Kurtley
Kurtley is an Australian Cattle dog or Red Heeler, a non worker who has come to enjoy the comforts afforded a house dog in the burbs. He has a beautiful soft coat and a heart that just lives to please his owner every second of the day. Kurtley has a few working dog instincts of heeling and herding. He can easily be with another dog for a companion as long as they have their own safe place to rest as he likes his own space sometimes. Kurtley enjoys the life of an indoor dog.
Kurtley is only just learning how to be a dog, he has an unfortunate history so will need a calm and very patient family to bring the best out in him. He will dig and steal shoes however can be redirected easily with calm but firm boundaries. This little man shows his best when given the patience any young leaner deserves.
Kurtley is super clever, he is learning how to recall, will obey basic commands that he has been taught and there is no doubt, he has the capacity and the desire to learn more. Kurtley is house trained so he can easily join in on family time inside. When it’s time to rest, he likes his own spot near you and will give you cuddles on his terms, but he does like his own time as well.
Kurtley has been exposed to a few children and likes to run and play with older ones. He will chase birds and cats and has reacted to chooks. He would love to have another dog to play with who can match his love for tug rope and toy tossing. A playful older dog will teach him how to behave, enjoy play and be his guide in all things dog. He is only just learning how to ball chase so bringing it back is a skill he has not mastered yet.
Dog parks are still quite overwhelming for him as he is only just getting comfortable with his own small pack. He takes a while to warm up to outsiders and can shut down if forced into uncomfortable situations. Kurtley is still not 100% comfortable with loud noises like cars, trucks and will need a patient slow exposure to the outside world to help build his confidence. Travelling in the car is still short distances only as he does love an adventure but still gets long distance motion sickness.
There are several potential types of owners who Kurtley would be suitable for but any future owner must be experienced with heelers so you can understand his little peculiarities. Ideal for Kurtley would be Retirees or Seniors looking for a dog who can help by acting as a companion on walks, gardening assistant and front door guard dog. His prospects are not limited to just these groups but keep in mind knowledge of the breed, will go a long way in your relationship with Kurtley.
