About Dexter
NO MORE APPLICATIONS. DEXTER'S ADOPTION IS ON HOLD. HE MAY GO OUT ON TRIAL IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO APPLIED FOR HIM.
Meet Dexter, our little apricot toy poodle, just over 4 years old. He weighs approx. 4.7kg and is fully vaccinated, heartworm treated, micro-chipped and de-sexed. Dexter will be not be available for adoption until after the 15th April, to allow him time to recover from his dental procedure - some extractions are necessary as well as a clean and polish.
Some things to know about Dexter:
He has to have another small dog to keep him company; he does not like being by himself and loves to play with toys and his doggy friends. He cannot be left at home alone for hours on end, even with a doggy friend – he is used to human company and will cry - he has a very high pitched voice! He is an indoors dog and must have access to go outside to toilet. His yard must be fully fenced and secure so he can run around in it. Colourbond is best suited. He gets over excited when his carer arrives home and makes plenty of noise, but soon settles down. He loves to spend his day inside on a lounge chair, happy to sleep there at night as well, but certainly wouldn’t knock back the opportunity to sleep on your bed if allowed. HE IS NOT SUITED TO APARTMENT/TOWNHOUSE LIVING. HE IS TOO NOISY!
Dexter travels well in a car, properly restrained, and enjoys going for a walk (a good fitting harness is best for him.)
Here is some valuable information on the Toy Poodle which should be considered and understood before committing to this breed:
• While generally good-natured, the Toy Poodle is NOT recommended for small children. While they are very loyal and joyful companion dogs, the toy variety doesn’t have much patience for kids. Toy Poodles can nip and growl due to fear and confusion, and younger children may unknowingly provoke them.
• Poodles do not shed and are often tolerated by allergic people. Their coats do take a great deal of care though, generally requiring professional grooming, as well as regular combing and brushing at home. Dexter will be visiting our groomer Tracey on the 15th March for a tidy-up, shampoo and blow dry. The Poodle should be taken to a professional groomer about every six to eight weeks for a clip of your choice, if you are not able to do it yourself. Without regular clipping the coat will quickly become a matted mess that can cause painful skin infections at the roots. The poodle’s ears need frequent cleaning or they will become infected, and daily teeth brushing is recommended or tartar will build up rapidly and lead to gingivitis. There is a variety of good quality dental hygiene chews available through your veterinary clinic or pet store.
• Poodles are active dogs that thrive on attention and learning. There’s a reason they used to be popular circus performers. Daily walking/exercise is a must - they are full of energy! But be careful not to overdo it.
• The average toy poodle will live for between 12 to 15 years.
In summary, Dexter will make a wonderful loyal companion to the right person/couple who understand his needs and will allow him to be an integral part of the family.
Medical notes
Dexter is booked into his vet for a dental - some teeth removal, polish and clean.

.......................
Midcoast Dog Rescue Inc. is trying to expand its foster carer network so that we can help more dogs in need. This is a very rewarding experience and suits a variety of people. Some people, for whatever reason, are unable to make a permanent commitment to a dog, a commitment which can last for up to 15 years. Others use the fostering experience as an interim measure before committing to permanently owning a dog. If you think you could be interested in becoming a foster carer, either on a long-term or a short-term basis, and would like more information please contact Nigel on 6584 4992 or Wendy on 6584 7027.
