About Jasper
This is Jasper. A rising eleven year old Toy Poodle for whom words can do no justice. This boy is so incredibly endearing.
Bossy. Quirky. Playful. Saturated with love. Overflowing with charisma. Brimming with loyalty.
This boy is older and he does have his health issues, but he is fit, active and bursting with a love of life. To be a human with these age and health-related concerns is sometimes to be plagued with a sense of impending doom. But Jasper is comfortable, happy and he doesn't own a calendar. Jasper lives in the moment and that's the magical thing about dogs.
Jasper is a funny boy with a big personality. He doesn't play by the rules; he does his own thing and he owns it.
When Jasper is excited, he doesn't wag his tail and pant. He screams. And why the hell not? Let's face it. Without the burden of the social-norms that are thrust upon us we would too.
Whether correcting or praising, this boy's stare never wavers, he looks right into your soul as if your blabbering, inarticulate irrelevancies juxtapose distastefully with his all-encompassing philosophical understanding of the world. And all you can do is laugh. Because this tiny little fluffster's impenetrable gaze of confidence is the most hilarious and disarming thing in the world.
But Jasper wants to own all the joy. So when his canine comrades begin to play he intervenes with an assertive correction, the likes of which could never be translated into English without heavy redaction.
He feels the same way about children and he is often triggered by their rambunctiousness, so an environment where he is not exposed to human youngerlings is mandatory.
Jasper is not the sum of his age nor his medical issues. He is a unique experience. People often shy away from older dogs because they feel they cannot deal with an impending loss. I can only counteract this misapprehension with the fact that to have never had Jasper in one's life would be the bigger loss. That and we suspect many years are left in him yet.
To spend time in his enormous presence is a privilege denied to many - we can only mourn for this loss for millions and celebrate in the gains of the fortunate individual who will share in this boy's retirement.
He knows the elements of importance in life, in a way that we never could. Play. Food. The sun. A gentle breeze. The soft stroke of his most loved human. Adventure. You.
The future is just imagination. The past is just memory. Now is the only thing we have.

Medical notes
This poor boy has not been able to catch a break, until now. He's had an FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) in the past, which means he's had part of his hip bone removed. This doesn't seem to affect him at all and dogs often do quite well after this procedure.
Jasper has had his anal glands removed due to repeated infections. He retains some habitual licking of this site though it's very minimal now.
This poor boy has had an allergic skin condition which is now under very good control with an inexpensive medication.
And finally, Jasper has a collapsing trachea, which probably sounds more dire than it is. This condition is a weakness in the tracheal cartilage which can be degenerative, though not usually fatal.
Both his skin condition and his collapsing trachea are kept under good control with with half a prednisolone tablet every second day. This is one of the least expensive medications to purchase.
We expect him to have a good life expectancy despite these prior and current conditions. He is a fit, active and happy boy.

Please tell us about yourself using the green ‘enquire about this pet’ button below. We do not operate on a first-in-best-dressed basis. Instead, our aim is to find the most suitable forever home for the animals in our care.
Your application should include details about who lives at your home, both humans and animals and what their daily schedules and living arrangements are like. It should include details about your previous dogs and a thorough break down of the house rules you will have for this pet as well as what their typical day will look like.
Please tell us what your dog’s sleeping arrangements will be as well as what you plan to do with your dog if you go away on holidays.
Please provide AS MUCH detail as possible to increase your chances of a successful application.
It may take up to four weeks to process the applications. Please try to be patient. All applicants will receive a response - but it won’t be an immediate one.
If your application seems promising you will be contacted for a telephone interview. Should this be successful you will be invited to a meet and greet and asked to send photos of your property.
Should the meet and greet end favourably, you may pay the adoption fee, sign the paperwork and take the pet on a two week trial during which time you will be asked to provide regular updates.
During this trial period the pet remains the property of Onyx Rescue and adoption will only be finalised following a successful trial.

AN OPEN LETTER TO APPLICANTS:
We hate to disappoint people. It’s something that really upsets us, but unfortunately it comes with the territory of what we do. So we want to take the time to explain something.
When we take on a dog, we make a commitment both to that dog and the former owners of that dog to find this fur-kid their perfect forever home. Our primary criterion in order to achieve this is whether that home is a good match for that dog. Each dog can have vastly different needs from the next and every home is different.
Sometimes well-intentioned people put their friends in touch with us, sometimes we are approached by friends or even family in relation to a particular dog. However, we have made a promise not to compromise on our commitment and we have to turn them down.
This isn’t a reflection of their dog ownership skills, nor how we feel about them personally. Our decision will always come down to whether we believe that they are a match. Not just any match - the best match.
Sometimes we are lucky to have several interested parties who would be a good match and it can be difficult to choose between them. Our ultimate decision will, however, not be influenced by our relationship with this potential adopter, be it secondary or primary, nor the number of times they have applied and missed out previously, nor whether they applied first, nor the number of times or methods used to contact us about a particular pet, but whether or not they are the BEST match available.
So if you know someone who is interested in any of the dogs at Onyx Rescue, or you are interested in one yourself, please go through the proper channels and send your application through Petrescue. Please do not take offence if you or your friends are not chosen - this only means that there was someone who was a better match. Not a better person, not a better dog owner, but a better match.
We believe there is a home for every dog and a dog for every home, so if you’ve not been chosen previously please do not give up applying - the next one may be your perfect dog.
