About Max ~ 1.5yr Old Kelpie (on trial 7/4/21)
Calling out to the Kelpie lovers………This strikingly handsome boy is Max, a 1.5yo Kelpie in search of the perfect home; one that is familiar, experienced and willing to take on all that comes with a working breed.
Max is a very clever boy, who is very quick at learning and eager to please, but still needs some guidance and reassurance. He has a fair amount of energy, so regular exercise, play time and mental stimulation are needed, because he is a typical working breed.
Dog Rescue Newcastle did bust him out from a rural pound and given some of the traits he shows, it is possible that Max was to be used as a working dog on a farm. He came in a little scared and timid, with little trust in humans and has come a long way since but will still need a confident and reassuring person to build that trust and continue to let him shine.
Max does like dogs and is currently living with an older male dog, whom he adores, but his working breed instincts are quite strong and when they are out and about walking, Max decides that it is his given right to protect the other dog and he becomes quite unsociable and fixated. When he is by himself, however, this drive is a lot less. He is still quite nervous when he is out but settles a lot quicker. This is most definitely an area that Max needs help in as it appears, he has missed out on proper socialisation as a young pup.
By NO means is Max to be “thrown” into the ring of a dog park, dog beach or any where that there are large concentrations of other dogs as a means to “socialise” him better. Max Needs consistent training, effort and patience from his new owner. These environments overwhelm Max, and he may never be the dog to run free playing with other dogs at the beach or park, but he DOES love to walk and run. He isn’t a basket case or “damaged” goods, his original owner failed at showing him the way and just needs to be shown, guided and encouraged, because he has come leaps and bounds with his current carer who continues to work with him daily.
Max walks well on a lead and has been learning proper leash manners, which helps with his social behaviour. He is highly food motivated, which helps with his training. He is a typical high energy kelpie and as mentioned will need physical and mental exercise but is also happy to be a lounge lizard once he has had his exercise. He absolutely loves people and will greet all humans of all ages and sizes with a big smile and wriggly bottom. He has been around toddlers without any dramas.
Max is full of character and will bring you joy as you watch him. He will entertain himself with his toys but does love to play tug-o-war with you. He hasn’t been destructive but, Max is an intelligent, high drive dog, so if he gets ignored and bored too often, there is a good chance he will. He also isn’t known to escape as he appreciates, all too much, the good life at home.
Whilst Max is living with another male dog without any problems, our suggestion would be, especially if Max is to be in an urban environment, that Max be an only dog initially so that he can get the proper training he needs, without having the distraction of another dog or if there is another family dog that Max would get on with, the new owner be prepared and committed to walking/running and training Max separately. A home on a secure property/acreage in a less built-up area, with another dog where it’s not overwhelming for Max but where he still gets to run would also be an option for him.
