About Sammi
We are happy to announce that Sammi will be going out on trial on Wednesday, We wish her the best of luck with her new family!
We would like to introduce you to Sammi, our beautiful yellow Labrador Retriever, almost 1 year old. (D.O.B. 27.07.2020). She is being rehomed as current owner is not able to handle her enthusiasm.
Sammi is a very special dog, extremely well-bred and comes with pedigree papers. However, she has been diagnosed with mild Elbow Dysplasia and has been de-sexed, so a family of puppies is out of the question for her. Like all Labs, she is even tempered, intelligent, outgoing, trusting and gentle-natured, (which is why they make excellent therapy dogs and excellent assistance dogs for those with disabilities).
A recent x ray at our veterinary hospital showed signs of Elbow Dysplasia in her front elbow joint. Elbow Dysplasia, common to large breed dogs, possibly caused by different growth rates of the bones that make up the dog’s elbow, causes joint laxity and can lead to painful lameness. It was thought that corrective surgery would be required, however a CT scan showed that surgery is not needed. The vet expects this lameness to resolve as the dog matures, at least to a significant degree, if not entirely. A medical report from Sammi’s vet will be made available to qualified adoptees. MDR will only consider local adoption applications or from people living within an hour’s radius of Port Macquarie.
Midcoast Dog Rescue is looking for a special home for Sammi – a home where she will be an integral family member, allowed access inside the house 24 hours and day with outside access always available. Like all Labrador Retrievers, Sammi can be over active and probably will be until about 2 years of age, or older! This lovable Lab will suit a home where she is the only dog; she needs to be around her family and is definitely not a backyard dog as she craves all the attention of her human companions, 100% of the time. She can be a tad destructive if left at home alone…no shoe, sock or hanging tea towel is safe from her!! A lonely, bored Lab is apt to dig, chew or find other destructive outlets for their energy! A supply of sturdy toys should be available too.
Already Sammi is a big girl, weighing in at approx. 28kg and, we think, is best suited to an owner who has had experience with the Labrador Retriever breed, or at least owned medium to large sized dogs. She also likes to take YOU for a walk, so strong arms and loads of patience are mandatory.
Labs have the intelligence and eagerness to please that makes them easy to train. Sammi, like all dogs, needs to be taught good canine manners, and was taught right from wrong from the very beginning, but she can be naughty and stubborn, so some further obedience training will benefit her.
Labs love, love, love to eat and become obese very quickly if overfed. Treats should be limited and regular meals measured out - and never leave food out all the time. Labs do shed hair, so Sammi will need a daily brushing, especially when shedding, to get out the loose hair. Nails, teeth and ears also need constant attention and checking.
Labs love water!! Sammi is no exception – frolicking under the water sprinkler is fun for her and an easy way to keep her entertained. Labs can be prone to sensitive skin conditions, so hosing her down will keep her looking clean and smelling good too.
Applications to adopt this gorgeous Lab are now being accepted. In the first instance, please register your interest through our Pet Rescue site. Phone calls will not be accepted without an application

.......................
Midcoast Dog Rescue Inc. is trying to expand its foster carer network so that we can help more dogs in need. This is a very rewarding experience and suits a variety of people. Some people, for whatever reason, are unable to make a permanent commitment to a dog, a commitment which can last for up to 15 years. Others use the fostering experience as an interim measure before committing to permanently owning a dog. If you think you could be interested in becoming a foster carer, either on a long-term or a short-term basis, and would like more information please contact Nigel on 6584 4992 or Wendy on 6584 7027.
