About George

Hi, I’m George! I’m a 5-year-old dog who is like a big puppy. I have lots of energy, I love human company, I’m fun, very affectionate and smart (my foster carers say I’m too smart because my smartness can get me into mischief like opening kitchen cupboards and fridges…!).
Despite this, I’m not suited to a novice dog owner. I suffer from separation anxiety you see, and I’m currently medicated for it. I’ve come a long way though. I came into care after being found in the bush extremely thin with calluses on many parts of my body. Some are healing nicely, and they don’t bother me. My separation anxiety has decreased, and I can be left alone inside for a few hours with no issues. I’ve also had incidents with other dogs which has caused me to become hyper-aroused when I see dogs. I used to be great with other dogs so ideally I’d like to get back to that point in a safe way through careful socialisation and of course, training. Other things that bug me are cats (they drive me crazy and it can take me a while to calm down), strangers coming to the door, the doorbell ringing or unknown cars coming up the driveway.
I know basic commands such as sit, stay, shake, high 5, leave it, gentle, up, on your bed, toilet and waiting for permission before eating my meals. I’m a fast learner and I like to learn so I would really benefit from going to doggy school to improve my lead walking skills because I tend to pull (unless I use a Halti) and to learn further obedience and channel my smartness in a more positive way.
I’m extremely food driven. Give me a snack and I’ll do pretty much anything! A Kong with peanut butter, a big marrow bone, hunting for food in the backyard and in trees – I’m a happy, entertained George!
I’ve started going for jogs and bike rides (on a lead) with my foster carers and I love it. I love being outside exploring and going on car rides so if you’re outdoorsy, I’d be great for you. I also enjoy playing with a frisbee and balls and playing ‘keepings off’. For these reasons, I’d ideally have access to a larger yard so I can run around and burn off my energy.
In summary, I’m incredibly loveable and loyal, but I’ll need formal training, support, guidance and most importantly, patience. For now, I need a home where my new owners will be home more often than not until I adjust and feel safe.
