About Chester
Hi! I'm Chester, a handsome, lovable BOOFA of the first order. I'm a gentle soul who would prefer a quiet home, and several short walks during the day. I love dogs of all sizes, and my carers say I have the best 'doggy manners' they've ever seen. If a dominant dog gets narky with me, I'll turn away, and I can tell when another dog is nervous and will give them space. But I'm happy to play if they want to. It doesn't seem like I've been around toys or games much--I like chasing a ball but haven't grasped the concept of giving it back yet. Mostly I like it when we play chasey in the back yard :).
When Chester came to SAFE he had separation anxiety (on anti-anxiety meds), and was suffering from skin allergies. We had a feeling most of this was from undiagnosed pain, and situational stress. Full x-rays have confirmed that Chester's pain does not require any intervention other than diet and pain meds. With a calmer environment, pain meds, regular gentle exercise, and a different diet, Chester is a completely different dog already, and the vet and his carers are amazed at the difference.
Chester is not food driven and is quite a picky eater. He's currently on Prime 100 Kangaroo and will take his meds in a little melted cheese :) He is neither food nor toy possessive/aggressive. Slow to trust, he is is still a bit cautious of strangers, but has opened up to his carers. He's not a 'cuddler' (yet), but is beginning to grace us with the occasional lick-fest. He wants to walk at the very end of the lead, but is not a huge puller. We're told he has good recall but we haven't had him long enough to test that yet.
Chester has an impressive bark, and makes a great guard dog, but once you assure him any new visitors are 'OK', he quickly settles. He is loving the big back yard at his carers, but we don't think he's had access to lawn before--and has dug some impressive holes. We're redirecting him to dig in the non-lawn areas, but he'll need a bit more work in this area :)
Aside from being dog-friendly, we're told Chester has lived with cats in the past. When we've encountered cats on our walks (even at very close quarters-1 meter away), he hasn't bat an eyelid. We believe he would be fine with older children as long as they're big-dog savvy, mindful of his sore spots and not rough with him. We believe Chester would suit an older (but still active) retired couple, possibly with another dog for company and grandchildren coming to visit. He truly enjoys socialising with dogs in the park on his twice daily walks, and also loves visitors coming and going at home, so he will need similar social outlets in his new home.
