About Bruno ~ 3.5yr Old GSD X Beagle (On Trial 14/3/21)
Bruno has soulful eyes and an endearing personality. This gorgeous boy is a 3.5yr old German Shepherd X Beagle. He loves to cuddle and to snooze, is quite happy to laze about in the sun when his owners are home.
Having said that, he also needs activities, games and challenges. He is very happy when he is actively exploring the garden when someone is working there. He also loves tug of war, fetching the ball and finding hidden food or toys. He is very smart and learns easily.
About his special needs:
Like the German Shepherd breed, he has an alert and protective nature. He is very wary of strangers whether visiting the home or out and about but does recover and with the right instruction will overcome this issue. He has made fast friends with me as his trainer and coped very well with an in-home vet visit.
Like the Beagle breed, he has a very keen sense of smell and loves to sniff, needing someone who understands this and who is able to learn how to utilise it as a reward.
He currently lives happily with two pet greyhounds in foster care and gets two walks a day (about 20 minutes each). He is an indoor dog and is perfectly house-trained.
He knows Sit and Down Stays and how to stay on his bed for long periods of time as part of his Separation Anxiety training. He is learning to walk well on a lead but can be easily distracted. He is a strong dog but has come a long way in this area and with continuing training there’s no reason he won’t be a great walking companion.
About his future home:
+ Would suit a calm home, ideally without young children because he requires a lot of time and support.
+ He needs not to be left alone for long periods of time on a regular basis. His separation anxiety is able to be remedied but will require work and could regress if his owner were suddenly to start leaving him alone for 8 hour days on a regular basis. Someone who works regularly from home or who works alternate shifts to their spouse would be ideal.
+ He requires ongoing training and someone willing to put in a lot of time into meeting his needs for challenge and play and ideally who will play games that utilise his drive to sniff.
+ His owner needs to be confident in handling his strength and advocating for his space with strangers. He needs time and support to meet new people and his owner needs to be aware that his is reactive to strangers and willing to work with a trainer to address this.
+ Owner lives in New South Wales, preferably the Hunter Region
His current home is very committed to finding the right home for Bruno and have been putting an extraordinary amount of work into his training and should be commended for this. Not every home is the right one for every dog and I have no doubt the right home is out there for this fella.
