About Dougal
PLEASE NOTE THAT UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE UNABLE TO FLY OUR ANIMALS EITHER WITHIN WA OR INTERSTATE
NAME: Dougal
BEFORE SAFE ESPERANCE: Came to us from the local pound.
BREED: Huntaway x Foxhound
General breed traits:
Huntaway - developed in New Zealand for sheep herding this is a larger sturdy working dog that uses its bark in the field. They are quick witted, intelligent, athletic and good natured but require firm training to bring out the best. If under exercised they will become hyper and destructive. They love the company of humans forming close bonds. They are good with children and other animals and tolerant of strangers.
Foxhound - a hunting dog that has a baying bark. With high energy requirements he would make a great running companion - is intelligent and courageous, prized for his stamina, good nose and determination. Gentle, social and tolerant he is better with older children due to his size and needs a well fenced garden due to his hound tendencies and high prey drive. Obedience training and socialisation is a must from an early age and they often do better with a canine companion as being pack animals they can become bored and destructive if the only dog.
ASSETS: He's an absolute darling! Easygoing, affectionate, devoted, eager to please, friendly, sensitive, active, quiet and very sweet! He is friendly and calm around all people that he meets.
FAVOURITE THINGS: Cuddles! He is extremely affectionate and will be on your lap at every opportunity so be prepared to be squashed! He also loves to play with the other dogs in his foster home. Chasey and doing zoomies are particular favourites of his.
ENDEARING FEATURES: He has very soulful eyes! He also has lovely manners and is very gentle. If there's something he doesn't want to do he will drop to the ground and play dead!
OTHER ANIMALS: He gets on well with other friendly dogs after gentle introduction. He has been introduced to cats and was initially a little fearful and then quite disinterested so may be able to live with a confident cat with care. We cannot say if he will chase if outside.
GENERAL INFO: Dougal's lead training is going well but he can pull if he wants a good sniff. He is housetrained, and will bark when he hears strange noises. His command training is coming along nicely. He was initially scared of cars, but will now get in and is starting to enjoy the ride. Before coming into care Dougal had very little opportunity to experience the world/other people/dogs outside his yard and can therefore be a little scared when he's uncertain of what's going to happen, but gentle encouragement will help with this.
HOME ESSENTIALS:
* Stability: A home where someone is there for most of the day on a permanent basis (not just through Covid 19) or can take him with them when they go out, as he doesn't like to be left alone. He needs someone who will take the time to train him. Classes are essential for Dougal to make up lost ground, where he can socialize and learn new things in a safe and controlled environment. Due to his breed mix he needs a job and the opportunity to use his brain.
* Time: Dougal will need daily exercise. A good walk or run at least twice a day to keep him happy and healthy.
* Space: Dougal would do well on a property where he can spend the day with his human and be a part of the daily routine. If contained he needs a high fenced, secure garden - he can really jump!
* Love: Dougal needs to be allowed to be inside or out as he chooses, to sleep inside at night and to be included as part of the family. He would go well with dog-savvy, teenagers and would love to live with a youngish doggy friend dependent on meet - he has always lived with another dog, even in care. Dougal is a velcro dog and desperate for love - he so wants to find his special human.
If Dougal sounds like the perfect boy for you, please send an enquiry and we'll be in touch soon.
