About Barley ~ 4yr Old Great Dane X(On trial 19/2/21)
Meet the beautiful Barley. Barley is a 4yo giant sweetheart who will have your heartstrings wrapped around his giant paws in no time. He is a large mixed breed, possibly Great Dane x Mastiff, weighing in at 45.5kg.
For a large dog he is quite gentle and calm around people (little ones included), always wanting a pat. He won’t come barging or barreling towards you, instead just loafing up to you for a pat and if you pat him long enough, he’ll lean on you as if you were a tree. Currently he lives as an only dog with adults and teenagers, but he previously has lived with 4 young children and his foster carer has continued to expose him to the children in the neighbourhood, and needless to say, he loves all the attention.
When it comes to other dogs, Barley is good, but he does get extremely excited with anticipation of meeting a new friend which results in him pulling and barking, so he will need training in this area as his size and depth of voice might be wrongly perceived by others. Once he has met other dogs, he is fine and loves a little play around, but given his size and the wariness some people have around big dogs, slow introductions and regular exposure to other dogs when out walking/socializing would be of benefit.
Barley does have energy to burn, so regular walks are needed. He also loves a game of fetch with the ball, so be prepared to throw. He has been to the beach and he absolutely loved the water and being there, but if you don’t live near a beach, that’s ok because he also loves chasing the water from the hose and running under it. He does have good name recall and his carer has been working on other basic commands to help him become that perfect all round dog. He will sit, shake and lay down on command and he is learning to stay and heel and he doesn’t jump up on you, unless you ask. He is also house trained and does enjoy
being allowed inside to hang with his people. When he is inside and he is happy knowing you are around, Barley will just chill.
Barley will still need a yard with secure fencing as he is a very social boy and if he hears/sees people or dogs and an opportunity presents itself; he will go and say hi. Being 100% of the family is also integral for Barley, because if he becomes a backyard dog again and forgotten about, he will go looking for company and attention.
Barley is desexed, microchipped and up to date with his vaccinations and his adoption fee is $300. Barley is currently located in the Hunter Valley with his carer, so if you think you could be the right person/family for Barley, you can get in touch with his carer Olivia at horvat13@gmail.com.
