About Sam
PLEASE NOTE THAT UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE UNABLE TO FLY OUR ANIMALS EITHER WITHIN WA OR INTERSTATE
NAME: Sam
BEFORE SAFE ESPERANCE: Came to us as an owner surrender.
BREED: Newfoundland X Border Collie X Red Heeler
General breed traits:
Newfoundland: bred as a working dog, also makes a good family companion. They are affectionate and friendly with children, dogs and strangers. Large, strong dogs that have a tendency to drool and shed. They are easy to train and need exercise and mental stimulation. Grooming is a must.
Border Collie: these are herding dogs, highly intelligent with unlimited energy, stamina and drive. Can make great family companions as long as they get loads of mental and physical exercise - not couch potatoes, they need a job. Easy to train but the herding instinct is strong and needs to be directed.
Red Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog) :Affectionate, devoted and protective of family but can be wary of strangers. Usually attaches to one person and loves to be close. Very, very high energy and highly intelligent - they love to have a job and if not mentally and physically worked enough can be destructive. Bred to herd by nipping so is mouthy and will nip cattle, children, pets, cars, anything that moves. They have a strong prey drive with other small animals unless reared with them. Not for novice owners.
ASSETS: Easy going, affectionate, friendly, active and playful! Due to a lack of socialisation when young Sam can be a little wary of new people initially but is fine once he's had a gentle introduction.
FAVOURITE THINGS: Sam loves to get out and about for walks in the bush and at the beach, and loves to swim. He also loves to run and play ball or tug of war with the other dogs in his foster home.
OTHER ANIMALS: He gets on well with other friendly dogs but can initially bark and run up to them as he is still learning some doggy manners - Sam is just excited to meet new dogs as he wants to play. He will chase cats and small animals so we won't rehome him with anything small and fluffy!
GENERAL INFO: As a young pup/dog Sam wasn't given the opportunity to socialise very much with people or other dogs and so he is now catching up. He is a very smart, active boy who once introduced enjoys being around people. He will need some training on the lead as he lunges towards other dogs in excitement. He has a beautiful nature and will make a wonderful, devoted companion. He is housetrained and is good with his commands.
HOME ESSENTIALS:
*Stability: A home where someone is there for most of the day on a permanent basis (not just through Covid 19) or can take him with them when they go out. He would love constant companionship and would make a great tradies dog, someone who works from home or would be suited to a very active retiree.
*Time: Sam will need plenty of daily exercise, he'd be a great dog to go running with. He will need at least 2 good walks each day to occupy his mind and burn off his energy. Sam would also benefit greatly from structured training classes to give him the foundation and confidence that he lacks.
*Space: Sam needs a large, well fenced, secure yard with some grass and interesting things for him to sniff. A property, farm or farmlet would be great for him.
*Love: Sam needs to be allowed to be inside or out as he chooses, sleep inside at night and to be included as part of the family. He would go well with dog-savvy, gentle children over 5 years old.
If Sam sounds like the perfect boy for you, please send an enquiry and we'll be in touch soon.
