About Tess
Tess has a giant, confident exterior, but she's a softie at heart … a huge teddy bear! She's a big dog and can sometimes be a little pushy, but only because she loves being smack in the middle of things and can't bear to be left out. She desperately wants to be someone's best friend, and is very loyal to the people she connects with. She occasionally jumps up when she's been left alone for a while and is excited to see you - and she sometimes noses in the door without waiting her turn. But with patience and consistency she remembers to use her manners, and when getting regular attention she is always calm and well-behaved. She's very clever, and would benefit from a strong, confident and gentle owner who can teach her the ropes of a new household. Tess is perfectly toilet trained, and is neither boisterous or destructive in the house or outside. If exercised regularly, she is happy to hang out quietly inside with her people. However, if under-exercised she tends to pace back and forth, which can be distracting when you're trying to watch TV!
Tess is a large, active dog, and requires regular daily exercise; either a long walk every day, or a chance to run around with someone and play ball to tire her out. She loves to run, and she absolutely LOVES fetch, as well as hunting around for exciting smells. She would be best suited to a larger block or rural property where she can be outside exercising during the day, and inside with her people at night. She is not demanding of attention or needy for pats, and is generally happy just to be in the presence of her pack. However, she is used to spending her time with people and would not take well to being left alone for long periods.
Tess walks happily on a lead. She has very good recall, but as a sight hound she can sometimes get distracted by interesting sights and smells and wander out of earshot. And if she spots a rabbit, she could be three towns away by the time you notice! For this reason, she needs to be monitored closely if off-leash, and called back periodically to make sure she's paying attention and hanging close by. If she can hear you, she'll always come running to a loud whistle or the sound of her name. She has a somewhat long coat, and needs light grooming once a week or so to keep her undercoat from getting too thick. Luckily, despite her huge tongue (which is often out) she is not a drooler.
Tess is also very springy and loves to bounce! She can jump vertically in the air to get over gates or into the back of a ute. For this reason, she needs solid fences and gates that she can't inadvertently bounce over. Being clever, she will also test gates and doors if she's left alone and wants to be near you. Car rides are her favourite thing in the world, and she will spring into the back of a ute or car at every opportunity. She loves the feel of the wind in her hair (and on her giant tongue!) and travels well inside the car or in the back of a ute.
The most important thing about Tess is that she needs to be the only dog in the household. She has resource-guarding tendencies around food, toys, and territory that make her very unsuited to living with other dogs. This is a non-negotiable requirement for Tess's new home, as she is dominant and has experienced problems living with other dogs in the past. Tess shows little interest in cows and poultry, and has never lived with small children and cats. She is friendly and tolerant with all humans.
Tess is keen to find her new best friend, and will reward any owner with her loyalty, happy grin, and endless energy for life!
