About Lucy
Lucy the Kelpie is the living embodiment of a second chance. Once a loved pet, Lucy found herself in the unfortunate situation of having too many puppies for somebody's gain. With some luck Lucy was retrieved by her original owner and surrendered to SCAR, where she has been working hard to regain her health and vitality. Given time and care this beautiful soul has a newfound zest for life and is looking for a stable home to live out her best years in a relaxing environment.
Lucy is a gentle and sweet girl with a wonderful temperament. At home, this senior girl loves nothing more than curling up and snoozing with her foster carers nearby. In saying that, Lucy loves going for walks and turns into an excited puppy, tugging a lot initially but eases off as the walk progresses. True to her breed, Lucy is curious, intelligent, independent and has herding tendencies. She likes to chase small animals, particularly birds, rabbits and insects, and likes to play with small dogs.
Although she loves to explore, Lucy has arthritis and cannot go on long, strenuous walks. Ideally, her new owner will be able to take her on two shorter walks a day, which also allows her to go to the toilet. Lucy prefers to go to the toilet outside of the home and is effectively toilet trained. As it seems that Lucy has not been fed consistently, commitment to a healthy diet will help give her the nutrients she needs, lose a bit of excess weight and manage her arthritis.
Lucy has previously lived in a rural area and is still getting used to suburban life. Although she is adapting well, Lucy does get spooked by loud noises and sudden movements, and is not comfortable on busy roads or shopping strips. Lucy will benefit from a confident and patient owner who gives her the reassurance she needs to build her confidence as an urban pet. A home with a yard with an adult only or family with older children would suit Lucy best and other dogs may be okay. Whilst Lucy prefers her owners to be home more often than not, she is able to leave home alone for short periods and there is potential to build on this. Lucy enjoys enrichment activities and can be occupied with Kongs, cardboard boxes and sniffing games.
