About Strudel (Australian Capital Territory)
We are currently taking expressions of interest for Strudel - the link for the EOI form is set out below. Please do NOT use the giant green petrescue button to make an inquiry as your inquiry will not be processed.
Before you submit an EOI, please make sure you have read Strudel's profile carefully. As mentioned below, we do not rehome our animals on a "first in best dressed" basis but based on the "best fit", depending on a foster dog's personality and requirements and an applicant's preference and lifestyle.
Strudel is a young pup who is as intelligent as she is adorable and affectionate. She and her two littermates were found abandoned in a box in south NSW. This means that we do not know her age or her breed. Our best guess based on appearance of the litter and their intelligence, is that Strudel might be a Kelpie / small dog breed mix. She weighed 6kg as at a vet visit of 27 November.
As you would expect from her possible working dog breed mix, she is extremely alert, clever and trainable. Strudel is house-trained (can use a dog door and takes herself outside to toilet), crate-trained and sleeps quietly through the night. She will even let you sleep in on weekends. She travels well in a car (in a harness or in a crate) and will chill out and does not get anxious when you leave the house.
Strudel has learned to sit and wait for her food. She lives with three older dogs and is very dog friendly, loves people and even turtles! She responds well to correction from humans and is very submissive with the other dogs if they tell her off. She has not yet been exposed to cats.
Although like most puppies, she gets very excited with new people and new situations, overall she is very calm for a puppy and definitely has an off-switch. She loves playing with (and destroying!) her toys, is playful and loves balls and playing tug with humans and other dogs. Although she would probably be fine as a solo dog, she is a very sociable dog and would love doggy company or at least plenty of human company during the day. She enjoys landscaping and gardening but as her sense of design may not be the same as you, if you have a beautiful garden you will need to supervise carefully or have proper barriers unless you like holes and mauled shrubs.
Strudel knows her name can sit, drop, shake hands and go to her mat on cue. She is also learning a "spin" and her recall to her name is very good.
As you would expect from her possible working breed mix, she needs intellectual stimulation and enrichment. She would do very well in a performance home and needs ongoing training and boundaries from her humans. Although as a puppy she looks very cute, working dogs like Strudel need ongong intellectual stimulation (not just physical exercise) or they will create their own fun and mischief.
Please note that Strudel is still a puppy so should not do any hard exercise (long walks, jogging, alongside a bicycle, frisbee) until she is at least around 14 months old and she has finished growing. Until then, she should do short walks and gentle exercise only. Accordingly, if you need an exercise buddy now, Strudel will not be the right fit for you.
You can follow her progress in foster care here: https://koalathebear.dreamwidth.org/tag/strudel where we have posted more photographs and videos of Strudel.
Medical notes
Strudel will be adopted out under a Desexing Contract and ownership transfer will formally only take place upon receipt of evidence of desexing.
