Well, it's official........the cause of our stunning Great Dane's emaciated condition was.........STARVATION!! When a dog like Alaska comes into our care, we almost hope that there is an underlying medical condition causing her to be so emaciated that every bone in her body is protruding but sadly, this is just not the reality. A beautiful Harlequin Great Dane like Alaska should be a proud majestic creature who turns heads everywhere she goes. When Alaska came to us, just over 3 weeks ago, people were staring at her for all the wrong reasons. Weighing just 30kg, Alaska was shockingly thin and her whole spirit had been squashed. When we took Alaska in to have a weigh in yesterday, she had gained almost 10kg (in 3 weeks!), she was so full of life and fun that she was actually difficult to walk because she was so strong and muscly. Watching the jaws drop as we walked into the clinic really made us realise what a huge change our girl had made. Whilst we initially assumed that Alaska was a cross breed, during her desexing surgery, our vets discovered that her ovaries had been removed. This is something that some breeders of large breed dogs have been known to do as it allows the dog to retain enough hormones for good bone growth whilst making them unable to breed. This is often done before a pup is rehomed, usually around the age of 4 or 5 months and given this detail, our vets believe that she is, most likely, a pure bred dog. At 40kg, Alaska still needs to keep gaining weight but we are all confident that she is now ready to continue her journey in her forever home. Alaska is 3 years old, she needs a home where her humans are able to handle a big, strong dog as she does need some help to stop pulling on the lead. Alaska is fine with other dogs but, understandably, does not like dogs around her when she eats so being the only dog in the home would be perfect for her. Alaska adores people and is starting to become quite playful. PLEASE NOTE: This pet is located in Kingaroy.
