About Abby
Sweet little Abby (she is small for an almost 1 year old Kelpie) has spent the best part of her short life in a cage and if her timidness of people is anything to go by, she probably hasn’t had many good experiences with humans.
She was born with a missing hind right foot and part of her lower leg. We know that it wasn’t amputated because she has part of a paw pad on the end.
Abby was extremely timid at first, she would huddle in the corner as tight as she could when a hand of friendship was extended to her. She lay flat on the ground when first asked to walk on a leash, but she has gained confidence by the bucket load.
Abby is very social with all dogs, she loves to run around and play with them, so much so that it looks like she’s trying to kick start a motorbike with her short leg barely touching the ground! She loves to chase flies and butterflies. Abby’s leash walking is improving very well.
Despite her disability, Abby is very much a normal Kelpie. Make no mistake, she has similar exercise requirements as any other 1 year old Kelpie, but for shorter durations before resting.
Abby’s special needs apply more to her timidness than her missing foot. Her new family will need to be patient and kind and work with her to overcome her shyness. She’s come a long way in two weeks with us, but will be very timid with new people at first. I still let her drag a soft leash so I can step on it if I need to.
It may not be instantaneous, but Abby will bond to her new family and will be a lovely, loyal companion.
Abby will benefit most from a home with another dog to boost her confidence and a home where her owner will be around more often than not.
She is in care at Moree, NSW.
Abby’s new family will need to be prepared to drive to Moree to collect her, as transportation options are almost non existent (a 7 hour drive from Sydney).
If you think you have what it takes to win over this little “work in progress” Kelpie, we’d love to hear from you. Please enquire through PetRescue and tell us about the home and lifestyle you can offer Abby (please no busy young families).
Medical notes
A normal, healthy girl apart from being born with a missing hind foot and lower leg. The vet feels she will cope perfectly well with her disability.
