About Brick
Brick is currently an outside dog however he would happily become an inside dog if that suited his new owners. Mastiffs love nothing better than to be with their people and make very affectionate house companions. Investing your time and energy in this beautiful boy will reward you with a lifetime of affection, fun and friendship.
Walking and training
Brick does not appear to have had any lead training and doesn’t like to be left home alone so he needs a large, secure yard where he can run and play while he learns to walk nicely on the lead. Mastiffs are large, strong dogs and Brick needs a strong, patient handler to help him learn not to pull. He is eager to learn and highly food motivated however he is young and easily distracted. He will need short, daily, one to one lead training sessions in a quiet place to master loose-lead walking before introducing distractions like other people and dogs. Training Brick will take commitment, patience and consistency from an owner with large breed experience and obedience training skills.
Brick is a typical Mastiff in that he doesn’t cope well with warm weather. He needs walks in the cool early morning or late evening, however short opportunistic training sessions for recall, sit, drop etc are beneficial throughout the day.
Temperament
Brick is very sweet, happy, friendly and playful. Mastiffs are known to be loving, good-natured and protective dogs and beautiful Brick is no exception. He loves people, pats and cuddles and will follow you around wherever you go. If you are pottering in the garden you might feel a gentle nose to your hand, just to let you know he’s there.
Beautiful Brick loves squeaky chew toys and balls, playing chasey with his foster sister, training with intermittent treats and getting out for a short walk on a long lead. He adores being with people and is very well behaved when meeting the neighbours. Brick is young, joyful and curious and he loves to explore new areas and smells.
He is still young, excitable and very enthusiastic to get close to his humans quickly, especially when playing. He doesn’t yet have great control of his ‘brakes’ and although he generally veers to avoid a collision, he is not suited to very young children, people who are physically fragile, have poor mobility, or the elderly. He jumps up briefly on his hind legs to say hello, but doesn’t make contact or jump up on his humans or his foster sister.
He never means to hurt anyone but he can mouth when he is overstimulated and will stop as soon as he is told off. He knows the command “gentle” for taking treats and will sit on command for increasing lengths of time and wait for his food. He doesn’t show any food aggression and his meals can be taken from him without a problem whilst he is eating.
Brick is protective of the house and wary of strangers he doesn’t know, so he will bark when people walk past the house. He will stop if he recognises them and greet them at the gate or he will come to his humans when called to interrupt any excessive barking. He generally sleeps for large parts of the day and loves to play in the afternoons and early evenings when the weather cools down. This affectionate boy loves to lean in for cuddles and occassionally shares some of his drool because sharing is caring, but he doesn’t generally lick his humans.
Eating, sleeping and care
Brick currently eats a combination of wet and dry food morning and night. Mastiffs are prone to bloat which can be dangerous to their health so multiple small mea
