Hi there, I'm Hamlet! To be, or not to be... well, I've chosen to be a rescue greyhound, now I just need to find my perfect home!
I came to Greysland in a bit of a bad way unfortunately, but with lots of TLC from the wonderful folks at Greyhound Rescue and my greyt new foster family, things are only looking up. Now I'm looking for a nice gentle home with some comfy beds where I can hang out, practice my pet skills and get the pampering I deserve after my rough start in life.
I had a go at living in the inner city for a bit, but all the sights and sounds were a bit too frightening for a country lad like me. So I'm looking for somewhere a bit quieter, maybe with a backyard for me to chill out in when I don't feel like going out. I don't mind having a doggie friend to hang out with if there's one of them at yours!
What do you say - have you got a soft bed and some room in your heart for me?
A note from Hamlet's foster family
Hamlet is a sweet, excitable, gentle giant with a cheeky nature. He’s a big sleeper and will do so for most of the day, but prefers you are nearby anyway. He had a rough start in life so he may be cautious at first, but once you earn his trust he will really come out of his shell. He has become a very affectionate hound and loves a pat, cuddle and tummy rub.
Hamlet loves play time and has developed his love for soft squishy toys. He gets very enthusiastic about playtime and will sometimes get a bit vocal, but otherwise he is a very quiet dog and you would almost forget he is around.. until he farts and clears the room! He has adjusted to a very spacious backyard and all the zoomies, so it would be best that you have a garden for him to explore and feel at home. In saying this though, he is very much an inside dog. He’s a little bit of a princess and won’t want to go outside without you, in fact do nothing at all without you. He will lay in the most inconvenient places but this is to ensure he is closest as possible to you, also so you can’t sneak out and leave him.
Hamlet loves to go for walks and is not bothered by other dogs, he loves to say hello to all the neighbours but not their cats.
When Hamlet first came to live with us, he was scared of everything (including his own shadow) but after he settled he has turned into a confident pup. Fireworks, storms and wind (yes, wind) no longer bother him. He does however seem very hesitant to go outside when it is raining, even if he is busting to wee. But if you stand out there long enough he will follow you and go.
Hamlet is very well house trained, we have left him alone for up to 7 hours inside with no accidents. He would of course prefer you are there with him, but he copes well alone. We leave him some enrichment toys to keep him busy and distracted, he is definitely treat motivated and extremely intelligent at puzzles. One of his favourites is peanut butter in his Lickimat bowl. He will whimper when you leave and when you return, but this is normal.
Overall Hamlet is an extremely loving oddball who loves sleeping, food, car rides, walkies but most of all to be around people.
All of Greyhound Rescue's adoption and foster placements are on a case-by-case basis. We go to great lengths to match each dog with their new family to make sure that both dog and family are happy. We offer post-adoption support to our rescue community so that each adoptive family and hound are cared for.
We will send you an application form to complete and return. Then we will arrange a house check. It is important that the right hound goes to the right home! We can arrange for you to meet the dog/s and they can meet your family and/or other pets. Our hounds go “on trial” with your family for a minimum of 2 weeks.
Greyhound Rescue's adoption fee is $420. All our hounds are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated, and heartworm tested and treated. The adoption fee also includes our New Adopter Kit - collar, leash, muzzle and loads of other goodies to help you get your new hound settled into the family.
