About Teddy
Teddy is a lover, not a fighter. His motto is “Eat, play, love”. Usually in that order.
Teddy is about 3 years old, a domestic short hair tabby, with a fluffy belly perfect for belly rubs.
Teddy loves his food, and enjoys supervising his people as they cook and eat, but he has excellent manners and knows not to beg (too much).
When he first arrived in care, he had no interest in playing at all. After 3 weeks in care, he started exploring the scratching posts, the cat tower and the higher shelves and he now has his play sessions with strings, stuffed toys, balls and wands.
He’s a very affectionate cat and would seek out cuddles, belly rubs and kisses, especially after he hasn’t seen you for a while like when you return from work. With Teddy, a day never goes by without him rubbing his face against yours or headbutting any part of your body he can get to while purring in delight. If you crave personal space, maybe Teddy is not the boy for you as he will follow you around the house so he can get a little scratch on the head at any given time. He’s also happy to sleep next to you on the couch, with the occasional attempt to climb on your chest or curl up next to you to become your little spoon.
He’s a furball full of love. Are you ready to give him as much love back?
Oh, and you better have a big mirror as Teddy seems to like his reflection. Who can blame him? He’s such a good looking boy!
Teddy has not been tested with other animals or children, so slow introductions would be needed to ensure harmony. That being said, he is very curious of other cats and we believe he would like a furry friend to love and play with. Being FIV positive, and also for his own safety, Teddy needs to be an indoor only cat.
Medical notes
(1) Teddy came into care covered in scratches so we weren’t surprised when the vet did a blood test that came back as FIV positive. However, a healthy FIV infected cat can lead a normal life for a long time, and some cats outlive FIV negative cats. A study revealed that FIV infection rarely affects a cat’s lifespan.
FIV is a feline-only disease which cannot affect other animals or humans as it is a species-specific virus. The affected cat can suffer from a fully compromised immune system or can become an FIV carrier or become totally immune. The virus reduces the white blood cells making the cat more prone to infections so you must be ready to provide excellent love and care to give your pet a healthy life. Give your cat a well-balanced diet - no raw foods to avoid parasites or bacteria.
Take your cat to your vet at least twice a year for a urine checkup, blood count, and general health checkup. If you suspect even minor changes in your cat’s behaviour or health, report health issues to your vet.
Keep them safe indoors.
FIV negative and positive cats can live happily together as FIV is not passed casually such as the sharing of food or water dishes or toys, mutual grooming, snuggling, mock fighting, shared litter boxes, scratches, not even sneezes. You can cuddle FIV and Non-FIV cats at the same time and not spread the virus.
FIV cats can live with both FIV and Non-FIV cats without spreading the virus as long as all are non-aggressive. This is usually a matter of introducing cats SLOWLY. Any time a new cat is added to a household, there should be a slow introductory period whether cats are FIV or Non-FIV.
(2) Teddy came into care with an ear infection that is being treated with some drops and ongoing monitoring will be needed.
(3) Teddy came into care with a lump on his tail. The vet thinks it is an old fracture. At the moment, it doesn’t cause him any pain or discomfort, but as he ages, this can change and affect his posture. Please monitor it and consult your vet if you notice any changes.
