About Duke ~ White Shepherd~ On Trial 10/11/20
Introducing Duke - our sweet and charming 3 year old White Swiss Shepherd. This gorgeous boy is on the look-out for his new furever home preferably with a shepherd experienced couple or family.
The White Swiss Shepherd is a fairly newly recognised breed - they look like a white version of the Shepherd family, with pointy ears and the typical Shepherd face only slightly smaller. Duke, true to his breed is extremely clingy to his foster carer - following him around everywhere like a true Velcro dog! He prefers not to sleep on his own soft bed - choosing instead to lay on the cooler floor next to his carers bed (probably keeping one eye open to make sure his foster dad is still there!)
Once a White Swiss Shepherd like Duke falls in love with you, there is no escape from their devotion to you. The breed has a tendency to be warm and welcoming to children but can be reserved when meeting new people at first. Duke has been very good with children prior to coming into foster care - so if your kids are older than about 12-14 years then he may suit your family. Mind you, you will need to ensure that all family members still have plenty of time to devote to Duke as he won’t cope if you don’t include him in your family life. This boy is certainly not a yard-only dog. If your two legged kids have left home and you have lots of time and love to give to your new furchild then he may also suit you.
Like the rest of the Shepherd family, Duke is bright and intelligent and loves to work things out for himself. This means that simple long walks will not be enough stimulation for him - he needs mental stimulation and to be given challenges to exercise his mind. He would love a home where he could take part in dog sports of any kind (eg agility, nose work).
Duke is quite sensitive and responds best to praise and treats when it comes to training - forceful training techniques won’t get you anywhere and it will just make him more reserved. He wants to please you so he will listen to make you happy. Being such a sweet soul he is intuitive to his owners’ emotions and therefore he will make a great companion dog for a person who won’t be perturbed with this Velcro dog being their constant shadow.
Considering Duke has a long and fluffy coat his new family will need to accept life with white hair everywhere! Wearing black will be a thing of the past once you have Duke in your home! Please only apply for Duke if you aren’t precious about dog hair as we won’t consider a home where he’s not allowed inside with you for most of the day. Being a big boy, he will also need a yard for toileting and to give him room to sniff and have the occasional gallop. Playing “find it” type sniffer games in the yard would be great for him.
As you can tell by his profile Duke is an amazing boy for the right home. Feel free to email Jo on rescuepooch75@gmail.com to find out more about applying to adopt Duke. Or you can fill out the adoption questionnaire here https://form.jotform.co/82217742684866 Duke is in foster care near Raymond Terrace (north of Newcastle).
Duke’s adoption fee is $600 which covers his desexing, vaccination and microchipping. He has also been treated for fleas and worms. You can see all of our available dogs at www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au
Medical notes
As is typical of the Shepherd breed, the White Swiss Shepherd can also be prone to hip issues. Duke’s new family will need to ensure that he isn’t over-exercised and that they will commit to any vetting costs that may occur as he grows old (eg arthritis injections)
