About Ragnar
Ragnar is a 15 month old Great Dane X Mastiff and Great Dane Lovers Association of WA are assisting with his rehome. He needs an experienced large breed home to continue with his basic training, in particular loose leash walking and controlling excitement when visitors come. He is doing very well with his progress in all areas, he’s curious, smart (for a giant breed, remembering he’s not a Kelpie) very food motivated and eager to learn. Ragnar can take a little time to get used to a new area and the odd letterbox can be a little frightening too.
Ragnar’s new leader needs to be prepared to put in some dedicated time and effort, that if spent with him now, will pay off enormously. Ragnar has lived with another dog however has shown some guarding of food and his bed. His new home will need to be someone who has dealt successfully with these types of behaviours or be one where Ragnar can be the one and only dog. Due to these guarding instinctive behaviours, we will not consider a home with children under 12 years. The puppy side of Ragnar is very much alive and well. He needs his daily walk which he loves and training along with the controlled socialisation. Ragnar hasn’t had much opportunity to socialise with other dogs so will need to start with the basics. Off lead areas are not suitable environments for him at this point in time. Ragnar isn’t a high energy dog and just one or two 20 – 30 minute walks are sufficient. Once his exercise is done for the day, he shows his more mature side and is happy to lounge around on the couch. He is toilet trained and enjoys being an inside dog. We want to ensure he continues with such privileges.
Bath time for Ragnar is tolerated with a view to get to the towelling off/tug with the towel which he finds very fun. He’s not a water baby and when visiting the beach will keep clear of the wet stuff.
Ragnar is used to and does love lots of human company. If given enough time, he could adjust to a working home. He can be left safely inside with no destruction for short periods of time only. Soft beds etc are fair game if outside with him during the day. Lamb paddles and roo tails are a favourite treat and will help keep him busy during alone time. He’s not had issue with barking neighbouring dogs but likes to know what’s going on with people around his area and will bark at new noises and people over the fence.
Ragnar is a great big lap dog; he loves cuddles and is a very affectionate boy. His sucky teddies are his best friends. Ragnar is too exuberant with cats and chases them. Ragnar could suit county life; he’s not shown any potential to jump rural fencing.
If you think Ragnar might be the perfect next partner for you to get stuck into some dog training 101 and you know how to provide strong leadership, please get in touch with Lisa.
