About Augustus
Augustus is certainly quite a character. He loves his food and will tell you about it. Augustus can't wait to get out of the shelter and into a cosy home where he can run and play and get lots of attention. He has had to have a bit of a funny haircut while here at the shelter but it will soon grow back into a gorgeous fluffy ginger coat. This guy is handsome and hilarious and will benefit from a family with lots of time for him and lots of food enrichment to keep his smart mind active. Augustus is FIV+ so needs to be an only cat (no dogs please) and live an indoor life, preferably with a cat run as he loves to still see the outside world. His furever family needs to be prepared to give him lots of attention and fun activities to do.
Medical notes
Augustus came to us after a very harsh life, where he was allowed to get into fights with other cats in the neighbourhood. Sadly, he has been tested and found to be positive with FIV.
FIV is an incurable viral condition which affects cats; it is of no risk to humans. It is mostly transmitted from cat to cat via bites and fighting. Once a cat is infected, the virus causes some suppression of their immune system, and they will be infected for life. Studies have shown most cats infected with FIV go on to live happy lives and have a lifespan equal to that of cats without the disease. However, if they become unwell with another condition, their immune system will not be able to fight it off as well as a normal cat, so it can affect them much more severely.
Cats with FIV will need to be housed strictly inside or inside with access to a cat enclosure; they CANNOT be allowed to free roam at any time. While desexed cats fight far less than undesexed animals, the risk still remains, and if an FIV positive cat gets into a fight it can jeopardise other cats in the community by infecting them. It is a condition of adoption that you will ensure a secure environment without roaming is provided for Augustus.
