About Iron Bark
Iron Bark came to us very scared and timid dog. He was terrified of the lead and while on the lead refused to stand. However, it did not take long for Iron Bark to settle in and feel safe. He is still however unsure of new and loud noises and these can send him cowering to a corner. But with lots of positive praise he is starting to understand that not all sounds are scary. Iron bark is a very sweet boy who is slowly coming out of his shell.
Other dogs
Iron Bark although living with 3 other dogs is not a fan of others that are not in his family
Iron will need to be an only dog home as we have tested him with others and he isnt a fan
Food:Iron Bark loves food and will eat anything you put in front of him. . When feeding Iron Bark, we have been training him to sit and stay while we place his bowl in front of him. He is very good with sitting, but sometimes not so great at staying. Iron Bark is very gentle when being hand fed and will sit and wait his turn. We also give him dental sticks to chew on and treats when out on walks and while training him.Toileting:Iron Bark is fully toilet trained and has not had any accidents inside since he arrived, provided he has access to outside or is taken to his toilet spot every couple of hours or so. He sleeps through the night and waits until morning before going outside to go toilet. Commands/Training:Iron Bark came to us with no training. Iron can now sit on command and he also responds to no/yes, bed and come. While out on walks he does not pull on the lead and has been walking at a nice pace. He does tend to turn around frequently to check that you are still there. The first time on a walk when a dog barked, he pretended to sleep, now he ignores dogs barking while walking but this is definitely a work in progress. It is going to be extremely important that Iron’s new family be committed to ongoing training as Iron will need it. Bedtime:On his first night Iron Bark chose to sleep under the kitchen table, but since then he has slept on my bed every night and he sleeps through the night without waking. He does love to snuggle right up close.During the day Iron will sleep either on the couch, on a dog bed, outside in the sun or at my feet. I find that Iron feels the most comfortable either next to his sister sleeping or next to me. He does not seem to like to sleep alone.
Exercise/Games:Iron came to us not knowing what toys are. At first, he had no interest in toys at all, he did not know how to play fetch or tug a war, I do not believe he has even seen a squeaky toy. We have slowly been teaching him how to play fetch and tug a war, but sometimes I think he looks at us like crazy people. While playing fetch he has a habit of slowly walking to retrieve what has been thrown, bringing it back slowly, watching you throw ball, waiting for it to land, come to a stand still and then slowly walking to retrieve it again.Iron gets most of his exercise playing with his sister and chasing each other around the backyard.
People:Iron loves people and is very gentle. Iron is currently living in a house with 11, 18 and 19 year old.Iron loves to be close to humans and will normally find him snuggled up to someone on the couch. Iron will follow you around the house and always be close by your side.Iron occasionally will jump up on his hind legs to greet people but does not show any mouthy behaviour, this is why he would be suited to a home with older children
