About Rodney
Before you apply please take some time to read his profile as Rodney will need an experienced owner, preferably of the Spitz breed. We do not do interstate adoptions, except for the ACT. Rodney is not suitable for a home with cats or children.
Rodney is a very handsome, happy, loyal and smart 5 year old Japanese Spitz. He is in a lot of ways typical of the breed as he can be standoffish with strangers in his home environment although if you let him come to you he soon comes around. Once he is relaxed he is a very loving and playful boy who loves to play with his toys and enjoys you brushing his coat and paying him attention and will make a loyal and loving companion for the right owner.
We do not believe this boy had the opportunity for much socialisation with people and other dogs in his previous home from a young age. Whilst he was friendly he was quite uncertain of touch to begin with partly as a result of the heavy flea burden and skin infection he had which has now resolved.
His foster carer has had him in care for about 8 weeks now and has been working hard with Rodney to socialise him with her pack, build his trust with human touch and helping him be less reactive on the leash.
Rodney is a very smart boy and is eager to please you so he is doing much better in all areas and can also share his toys with his foster carers other dogs. He now looks to her for guidance and affection and loves for his coat to be brushed.
Rodney is also doing much better on the walk, however from time to time Rodney will come across something that perks up his interest. His carer just keeps the focus on her and moving him forward in a positive way.
Rodney is a very energetic boy who will need a home where he can get at least two long walks a day, perhaps you are into jogging, Rodney would love to be your running partner. His carer also believes he would make a good agility dog as he is eager to please, very smart and a quick learner.
When Rodney first came into care he could get a bit mouthy when he was uncertain about things due to some underlying anxiety His carer has worked hard with his triggers and he has come such along way under her care and guidance He is doing very well and she knows him very well now so he is calm and relaxed with her.
Rodney does loved to be loved. However as much as he needs an owner who will love him he also needs an owner that can be a “dog handler/leader” so that Rodney feels safe and to keep moving him forward in this regard to ease his anxiety in certain circumstances and to ensure that Rodney remains a good canine citizen.
Rodney travels very well in the car and as indicated does love getting out and about and in July of this year took part in the Penny Marathon in Sydney with a few of his canine friends and he was on his best behaviour whilst out and about with his foster carer whilst of course maintaining social distancing:)
Of course, Rodney will need access inside at all times and be able to sleep inside in a warm area of the home of a night and a home where his new owner/s are home more often than not.
Rodney has been living with lots of other dogs in his foster home as his carer runs a doggy day care/dog minding business from home so would be suited to a home with another dog provided that dog was well behaved/socialised.
If you think you can provide Rodney with the right home environment for him to continue to feel safe and secure then please don't forget to email us with as much information as possible on the home you are able to provide Rodney
