About Leola
All About Me and My Unique Personality:
Hi! I’m Leola, and I love attention but I’m not great with humans. I’m grumpy and easily scared, and when humans pat me wrong or if I get startled, often my immediate reaction is to bite or scratch - even if I was purring seconds before! I’m working on it. I have a big personality and like many majestic felines I have Opinions about things. Like whether you’re allowed to pat me, or exactly how you’re allowed to pat me, or the correct way to play, or if your hand is annoying. I’m a great housemate if you’re patient and can accommodate all my quirks.
When I first came into foster care, this biting and scratching happened a fair bit. I think much of it was because I was scared and anxious about the change of environment. Some of my grumpiness could also be because of arthritis. When my foster mum tried to pat me, I would swipe. But otherwise I’d mind my own business.
Quiet and routine has helped a lot, as has respectful patience and a lot of brave little experiments. My foster mum has since figured out a lot of my clues and dislikes:
* absolutely no touching my tummy or trying to pick me up
* sudden movements or loud noises make me scared (and I can bite when scared). Unfortunately flinching is a sudden movement and can exacerbate my reaction, so some bravery is valuable when learning how I like to be patted
* calmly offer your hand and let me choose it.
* during a pat session, move your hand away from time to time and let me choose it again if I want more.
* sometimes a light bite (and then run away) is how I tell you I want to play!
These days I think I’m slowly getting better at signalling before I try to bite or scratch - and I tend to swipe with claws in anyway, so no damage. Some of this progress is possible because my care has been adapted to meet me in the middle so I can learn at my pace.
It’s not all grouchy-pants though! I also enjoy a lot of things:
* I LOVE being brushed, as long as I choose it. I come straight over if I know I will be brushed. This is good, because I need brushing a few times a week to keep my coat under control and keep fur balls at bay.
* gentle pats on the head when I’m sleepy and in my favourite bed.
* hanging out on the couch for pats and chill. Sometimes I’ll climb on your lap and settle down for a little while, but I might not want you to touch me. TV is very interesting too. * nuzzling ankles and coming up for purry pats
* napping. I nap a lot.* hiding, and making silly noises in the evening when I hunt toys
* having you move a bit of string around the floor so I can pounce on it. Though sometimes I signal that I want to play by gently biting your hand or toes!
* walking all over your keyboard or jigsaw puzzle or book, demanding attention (even if I already have your attention)* TREATS. I’m a sucker for treats.
I’ve also started jumping on my foster mum’s bed to say hi and get a short pat in the mornings. Let’s see if it becomes a regular thing.
I’m a gold-class litter tray user - no accidents. And I’m a good eater. I also take great care of my coat by grooming myself, but a brush is always welcome. I prefer flat scratching pads, and in care I haven’t been destructive to furniture or finishings.
I’m showing some signs of slightly achey joints and possible arthritis, but so far it hasn’t stopped me running up and down the stairs or jumping onto the table to get to my favourite sleeping spot.
My Ideal Home:
I need a quiet home with an experienced cat-loving family, who can love me despite my grumpiness, and give me the space I need. My forever family must be pre
