About Nellie Melbourne
The Colonel 'Nelly" is a super handsome boy with a beautifully unique coat. His blue and white patches and deep chocolate eyes are sure to stand out at the local dog park, and his lovely nature charms everyone he meets.
Nelly’s got both brains and beauty. He’s adjusted well to life as a pet, conquering new challenges, like stairs, with style and grace. He is house-trained, learns commands quickly and has very polite manners. For such a big boy, Nelly has a very calming and gentle nature. He is affectionate and loving, but not overly needy and is quite content snoozing - paws stretched lazily in the air - for hours at a time. Nelly will make an excellent companion dog as he likes to be in the presence of humans, making sure they never feel lonely. He is confident meeting all sorts of new people from all walks of life.
He is a bit nervous and overly curious about small dogs but gets along well with larger dogs and is often excited to meet them on his daily walks. He might benefit from having a doggy companion to keep him company. He has medium activity levels – two 20 minute walks a day will be enough to keep him happy and healthy.
As his racing days fall further and further behind home, Nelly’s personality continues to evolve and shine, revealing a sensitive and loveable boy who will make his new family very happy.
No small dog or cat applications please.
Adoption details
Dogs are pack animals and Greyhounds, in particular, are very familiar with being surrounded by other dogs in their racing kennel environment. For this reason, when left alone without people or other dogs for company, they can be prone to separation anxiety which can manifest in destructive and/or noisy behaviour. Yes, they may "grow out" of it after a few weeks in their new home, but why put the dog through that stress to ultimately live all day alone, while everyone is at work? As a result we do not rehome dogs into households where they are left on their own for more than 4 hours per day, without either people or another dog for company.
During the COVID crisis, not all of our rescued Greyhounds will have the usual socialisation with other dogs so we may advise to use a muzzle in some situations until the dog is fully socialised.
