About Danny
Released on good behaviour and just lost a leg - 3-legged jailbird looking for a home to call his own.
Meet Danny (aka The cat from Unit 1).
This handsome, well-built lad has quite a story to tell... for many years, Danny has lived at the Wooroloo Prison Farm. No one knows what he did to get such a long sentence - he's a quiet chap, not big on sharing his history.
But he was happy enough there - sneaking in and sleeping on the beds of the lads there, eating food squirrelled away from the mess hall. He was a favourite of some of the staff, who helped him with flea and worm treatments when they could.
A few weeks back, Danny disappeared. Maybe he was trying a great escape? No one knew where he had gone, but there was a lot of worry among his friends. He was gone for over 2 weeks before, late one night, he dragged himself home to unit 1.
Danny had a nasty wound to his leg, high up in his groin. It was most likely caused by him getting caught on some fencing or something sharp. We think Danny hid away feeling vulnerable and in excruciating pain until he realised he needed help and went back to his mates.
A staff member who is involved in rescue was luckily able to grab him and get in touch with us at SAFE so Danny could receive urgent vet care.
The severity of the wound and the fact it had been there for some time meant that the only option to save Danny was to lose his leg. So now he's a tripod 🙂
Danny has had quite a life. We are extremely grateful to the guys at Wooroloo prison who have considered this boy family for many years, looking out for him with genuine kindness. Staff tell us that it means a lot for them to have the friendship of an animal, someone who doesn't judge or criticise.
We're also grateful to the staff member who got him to us for treatment and the others who have generously donated money towards his care.
Despite the love he's received, life at the prison has been tough for Danny. He's finished his sentence and is seeking a permanent retirement home.
😸Danny is an older lad - at least 12, maybe more.
😸He is FIV positive but seems otherwise well.
😸Danny needs a strictly indoor-only home. He will take time adjusting to his new mobility challenges and may be unable to jump up so this will need consideration.
😸He may be able to live with another cat but we feel a dog-free home is preferred.
😸Danny has never lived with children so would like an adult household please.
😸Danny is an incredibly sweet boy who LOVES chin scratches. But he's shy, quiet and withdrawn. He hasn't been in our care for long and we know his true personality isn't shining through yet.
SO he is looking for someone patient, understanding, gentle and quiet. Someone without too many expectations, who truly wants to save a life and knows that it might be weeks or months before a cat like Danny will be settled in fully.
His adoption fee is $50 ( desexing, microchip and vaccination included).
If you think you have a perfect home for Danny, please message the page or email avonvalley@safe.org.au and tell us about yourself.
Donations towards his vet bill are also greatly appreciated and can be made by bank transfer to our account
