About Sweetpea
Sweetpea has been through so much in her short life before coming into care. Despite all that she has the most beautiful trusting nature despite what she has endured.
From the moment we trapped her at a known sydney colony, we knew there was something special about this girl. Most cats shut down, try and escape the trap, not our girl. She was rolling around on her back asking for belly rubs.
We quickly noticed there was something wrong with her face. We took her to our vets where we shocked. At some point she has suffered sever blunt trauma to her left side, most likely due to a hit or a kick. Her jaw was completely broken and had already fused, meaning it was an old injury. Her teeth had grown into each other so the vets had to extract any teeth which were causing her discomfort. The surgery was quite hard on her, but never did she stop being her loving self.
Once she recovered we took her to one of our other vets who specialises in eyes.
He discovered she has an amazingly cool feature in her left eye called “persistent pupillary membranes” where the iris doesn’t fully develop and detach when kittens are growing in the womb. It has no ill effects on the eye except to make the eye look really beautiful and unique.
Because of her major head trauma endured – she has “Horner’s Syndrome” in her left eye. Horner’s syndrome is a condition with the following symptoms: the eyeball sits back in the socket, causing the third eyelid to protrude, the pupil constricts, and the eyelids become droopy. The condition is NOT painful and is not progressive. We have ruled out the nasty causes of Horner’s Syndrome (lung cancer). In Sweetpea’s case it is likely due to damage of her major facial nerves from the trauma she sustained before coming into the care of The Cat Orphanage. She can still see out of her left eye and she is not in any pain. The Horner’s Syndrome will not affect her quality of life – however she should probably be an indoor cat. There is a very very small chance her Horner’s Syndrome may improve slightly over time (years).
And most importantly She is fit to go to a new forever home!!!
Sweetpea amazes us every day. Her kindness is infectious and she just loves everyone she meets. We are so glad that despite everything she has endured it has not changed her beautiful personality.
