About Pepper DL2462
Like many of us, Pepper went through a huge personal journey during 2020. In June (mid-pandemic), she was left in the pound, only around 1 year of age, and terrified of people. Pepper cowered in the back of the cage, not wanting to come out. Once brave enough to exit, we found Pepper was more comfortable with women than men.
After finding Pepper a foster mum who was willing to work with her to build her confidence, we soon discovered Pepper was expecting puppies - she had been pregnant in the pound! Less than a month into her stay in foster care, Pepper became a mum to a litter of mini-Peppers. She patiently raised her babies, and once it was time for them to be adopted, she had to readjust to life on her own again. She was depressed at first, holding the puppies’ toys and crying.
Pepper spent the next 4 months recovering, as well as learning how to be a pup again herself. She loves her toys and balls, and will happily play fetch for as long as you can. She is still timid and cautious of people; she needs to be introduced to new people at her own pace, so that she can approach them when she is ready. Give Pepper time for you to get to know each other, and to slowly meet new people.
Once comfortable, Pepper bonds very deeply with you. Sure, she may not always come when called, but if you’re hurting, Pepper will always be close by to comfort you. She is a very special girl and has a lot of love to give. Her foster mum tells us she’s a big sook, is the best cuddler, and loves getting belly rubs.
Pepper is quite content to snooze the day away at home. She likes to be with you; she will follow wherever you go and nap nearby when you're busy. She is house trained and has access to both in and outdoors. She is okay at home while you are at work, though may take a few days to adjust to being alone.
Pepper loves going for walks, as she is a curious girl, but at the same time, can want to rush home when she finds things frightening. Head out at a nice quiet time of day where there are less people and dogs around, until she gets more comfortable being out and about. She is best suited to a home without other pets or kids, where she can relax and grow in confidence.
Always happy to see her favourite people, Pepper can get a bit excitable, so you'll need to be confident handling a large, strong dog. She has already learned how to sit and wait for her food, and will thrive with continued training to learn more cues. Keep plenty of chicken and cheese handy, as they're her favourites!
Pepper is ready to make the new year extra special by finding her forever person. As she is also looking for a foster home, you can foster Pepper with the view to adopt. Email DFLrescue@gmail.com today to apply.
