About Maddie
🖤🤍 MADDIE 🤍🖤
Maddie has had a rough start to life, spending a majority tied on a rope with little to no interaction. She has shown a lot of signs that she has been physically mistreated, which has ultimately culminated in fear-based reactions towards most people, particularly men. Since being rescued, Maddie has had two foster care homes, as she was not good with having the resident doggo take her first foster Mumma’s attention and began to ‘guard’ her. She is currently living in a large apartment with a yard and 5 acres of parkland across the road.
To be very, very, very clear from the outset Maddie is extremely sexist and does not like men. Unless they are a regular and introduced properly from day one she will growl, bark, and ultimately nip/bite if she feels a man is in too close a proximity to her or her human. There are some exceptions (like if they have a doggo with them), but on the whole she’s an extreme feminist taking it a tad too far. We’ve had a chat and unfortunately, she’s not prepared to change her stance on the matter. She can also have a growly/nippy reaction to pretty much anyone she meets out and about who tries to pat her or does not let her come to them.
We have seen a behaviouralist and received advice that this base level reaction is highly unlikely to change so please, if you are looking to apply this is something you need to accept about her. Having said that, she does go for a walk to get her foster Mama’s coffee every morning and is quite happy being out and about in un-caffeinated crowds which is more than we can say for her foster Mama.
We have worked super hard with building Maddie’s confidence. Her initial foster Mumma let her come in her own time and layed on the snuggles, pats and love nice and thick to get her to understand humans are not all bad. Her current foster Mama has had her in a confidence-building phase with a solid routine, lots of basic training and light exposure, pupper play-group twice a week and agility activities daily. She is a super fan of agility activities such as jumping up retaining walls, walking along fallen trees, going through/under objects. It has helped her become more confident in her abilities and would be ideal to continue with her for continued confidence and stimulation. Through playgroup she now really loves meeting new dogs and if she can’t play with them makes little cry noises!
Whilst Maddie is a working breed, she is really not typical of her breed in the most typical ways (ie energy level, need for extended stimulation). She is best described as a COUCH POTATO (capitals for a reason). She’s quite happy to lounge, nap and snooze for at least 8hrs a day. She’s also super small, more the size of a Beagle or Staffy who likes to snooze. She will sleep through the night without any issue (and the cutest piggy snorts and snores), until you drag her out of bed for a morning walk – yes, she has to be woken up like a teenager. She likes to snooze, did we mention that?
This beautiful munchkin is super smart which is awesome and annoying in equal measures. She knows the basics (sit, wait, stop, up, off, come, heel, okay) plus a few tricky ones (leave it, say hello, high-five, shake, to the park, go home). She will take any opportunity to be cheeky with her smarty-pants, like watching the cars on the road and taking off when it’s clear before you say okay or hiding at playgroup when you come to take her home. Her toilet training is coming
