About Yoshi ~ 2 yr mixed breed ~ On Trial 4/6/20
Introducing Yoshi our gorgeous 2 year old mixed breed boy. Yoshi is a medium size (approx 20-25kg) and is apparently a Kelpie - but being a big white fluff-ball that’s hard to see! It’s really hard to guess his breed but it’s possible he’s got some Border Collie or Arctic genes mixed in.
PLEASE NOTE: Yoshi is NOT suited to apartments, to a home with cats, chickens or children or to a family who are after a small dog.
When Yoshi first came into foster care he hadn’t had much one-on-one human socialisation, so he can be quite nervous meeting new people. If he feels overwhelmed or cornered he may nip. He is learning that new people and visitors can show him friendship (and treats!) thus discovering that they aren’t as scary as they first seem. Once he spends quality time with people and builds a connection with them he’ll be glued to your hip and constantly pawing you for a pat!
Despite his slow start to family life he has thrived in foster care - showing his trusted humans so much love and affection. He’s dog social so he would love to be adopted into an experienced family of dog lovers who have an existing friendly dog (preferably a female around 3-5 years). Matching Yoshi with a friendly and confident dog will help provide him with a positive role model.
Yoshi is at his happiest when going on daily walks. He is very easy to walk on lead and he’s slowly learning recall. He loves car rides and regular trips to the park and dog-friendly beaches. He can get over-stimulated and “herd” other dogs at the park so he needs to refine his manners with canine play time. He runs around the park like a greyhound and at the beach he’s getting used to the crashing waves and learning the water can be lots of fun to paddle in. With extra time, recall-training, treats and encouragement we can imagine Yoshi being a perfect beach buddy!
When he first came into care Yoshi had little basic training. He now knows most of his basic commands (sit, lay down, come) and is well accustomed to being included in an active family routine. We are specifically looking for a mid-aged family who understands that he will take some time to settle into his new home and getting used to new people visiting. He is best suited to a home with no toddlers or young kids as he can nip at their heels during play. He is not suited to young couples where having children is part of their future plans.
Yoshi is an excitable pee-er - when you get home he’s so excited to see you that he can’t control himself ! He has been checked by our vet and this toileting-enthusiasm isn’t medical - it’s a behaviour that he may or may not grow out of. Needless to say, greeting him on the grass in the yard is a wise idea! Due to his initial isolation he likes to sniff and pee on things when he’s in a new environment, so his new family will need to be understanding of this and work to settle him in. He had never been inside the home prior to coming to us so he’s been getting in-house lead training to ensure he doesn’t have any toilet accidents inside.
He currently sleeps outside but we’d like a home where he can sleep inside once settled in. Inside crate training will be beneficial in his new home.
Yoshi is a beautiful companion dog who has so much love to give. He is on the look-out for a compassionate forever family that will continue to show him the world is a fun place.
