About Izaak
Izaak is a chocolate, desexed male Labrador bred and trained in the Assistance Dogs Australia program. He is 1.5 years old, and is looking for a forever home!
This special boy needs a special family…
Izaak reached advanced training in the program, however, he has been released due to a diagnosis of Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). As Assistance Dogs typically work for several hours every day for most of their lives. DCM impacts on the pumping of the heart, leading to reduced exercise tolerance, so he will not be suitable to be in a working role. However he will make a VERY lovable pet dog!!
DCM is a lifelong condition that will require a very special family. Apart from his heart, Izaak is a healthy young dog with good hips and no skin issues or allergies. Vaccinations and worming have been maintained up to date throughout his life.
Izaak is an affectionate dog, and LOVES spending time with people! He would suit a family that wants a loyal companion and that can be flexible with his physical activity. This includes playing, walking and/or swimming at moderate-low levels, depending on how he is feeling. Izaak would LOVE to be involved in daily home duties and will be a great companion. He enjoys training, so mental stimulation will help him develop and maintain all the cues he has learnt so far.
Izaak’s ideal family would have either teenage/adult/no children that can understand his special requirements. If you have another dog (or dogs) in the family, they will have to have a meet and greet with Izaak. So he would be better suited to live with a more mature dog, to ensure his activity levels can be regulated. Izaak’s family should have the capacity walk a 25kg bundle of excitement if he gets distracted around other dogs when on walks.
Izaak has been administered Pimobendan to help with his heart problem, which costs approximately $230 per month. This medication must be strictly adhered to in order to manage his symptoms. He is given this 2 times a day 30 minutes before his meals.
Dogs with DCM need a very special family as it is hard to give a prognosis. He could live a normal life for 7-10 years with the help of the medication or his condition could advance and require further management. Any interested families can speak to our vet that has his full medical history and can further discuss the treatment recommendations.
