About Tonks
Tonks came into our care in August as a stray, after being found by a member of the public who was concerned she was lost and injured. Her microchip was scanned and, after contacting her owner, it was revealed that she had gone missing off their third floor balcony four weeks prior to being found. They sadly did not want her back and surrendered her into our care.
X-rays revealed fractures in her right tibia (hind leg) and her right humorous (foreleg). Unfortunately due to the time between the injuries occurring and her being found, the bones had already started to heal, although not properly aligned. After consultation with specialists we decided the best course of treatment was strict cage rest rather than attempting to re break and repair the fractures.
X-rays were also taken of Tonks’ carpi (wrists), which reveal osteochondrodysplasia. This is a developmental abnormality that affects cartilage throughout the body. This is what causes the folded ears in Scottish Folds, and this is why their breeding is controversial. Many Scottish Fold cats require ongoing pain relief for life to relieve their arthritic pain. This, in addition to Tonks’ fractures, means she will definitely require ongoing pain medication for her entire life. Due to her injuries she will need to be an indoor only cat, or have access to a secure cat run or courtyard. She should not be allowed to climb trees or jump fences (as much as this energetic lady would like), as she is at risk of re-fracturing her legs in the weakened areas.
Tonks has a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ personality. Whilst she does not love being picked up and cuddled, she absolutely loves to sit on laps! Given the opportunity, she will sit on you for hours, snuggling up under your chin. Pats and scratches on her head and face are her favourite thing! Adorably she drools when she purrs. She is very playful and loves batting her toys around the floor, and has recently learnt to steal the toy mice for sale right off the shelf!
She loves a pat and smooch on her terms, but if you pet her too many times she will smack you! She also harnesses an impressive amount of volume when voicing any displeasure she may be feeling toward you!
Tonks is sociable with other cats in our care, and could potentially co-exist happily with a quiet cat that is not too ‘in her face’. She has seen dogs about the clinic, and generally she chooses to sit and watch from a distance rather than interacting with or running from them, so we think she could live happily with a dog as long as it is not too bouncy and ‘in her face’. Same would apply for children, they would need to be old enough and able to read her and work out when she wants pats and cuddles, and when she'd rather be left alone.
Medical notes
Due to Tonks' injuries outlined above, she requires ongoing medication. Tonks is currently receiving quarterly Zydax injections, and daily anti-inflammatory and pain relief medications. This regime will need to continue for the rest of her life. Ongoing care for Tonks is estimated at approximately $700 per year on top of the normal costs of owning a cat. Please only apply to adopt Tonks if you are committed to continuing her ongoing medication and care.
