Medical Notes - Pingu has 'Manx Syndrome' which is a fancy name for having spinal deformities due to being a tailess Manx cat. Pingu also has severe hind limb abnormalities which is very normal for Manx cats who have Manx Syndrome. Pingu has an old fracture through the head of his femur bone in one of his hind legs. It is advised to research 'Manx Syndrome' and 'Spina Bifida' in cats before applying for Pingu. Pingu has a damaged eye, this causes him no pain and doesn't require and medications. Our vets believe he is blind in that eye.
Pingu arrived into our care many months ago after he was found by a concerned member of the public living under a boat ramp. Pingu is a Manx cat (no tail) and it is common for some Manx cats to have spinal and hind limb abnormalities. No Manx cat is exactly the same as another, and all have different abilities and disabilities. In Pingu's case he has limited function of his hind limbs, and the joints in his hind limbs haven't formed correctly. This has left him with fused joints in his hind legs which are less mobile than your average cat. This doesn't slow him down, he gets where he wants to go and does what he wants to do.
Pingu has no idea he is different and is a very happy little man. He spends most of his day sleeping in a comfy spot, or sorting out the pesky kittens he takes care of at HandiHQ. Pingu can climb with his front legs, but does spend most of his day on ground level. He uses his litter box to toilet without fail, and can climb into a normal depth box and prop himself up without any issues.
Being a special needs baby, Pingu does need his new forever family to be aware of a few extra things.
• Any internal stairs must be safe, and have no way Pingu could fall through the gaps or off the sides of the stairs.
• Pingu must remain as an indoor only cat at all times.
• Pingu's new family will need to make sure he receives a fortnightly pedicure to keep the nails on his hind legs at a good length. If they aren't trimmed regularly Pingu gets them stuck in his bedding and his beds end up being taken for a ride down the hall. His front nails must be left long to enable him to climb when he needs it.
• Pingu's new owners need to be aware that his medical issues could change at any time. We cannot tell you how his legs will be coping in 5 years time. It's a condition that needs to be managed as Pingu gets older.
• Pingu will require daily medication to help with any develping arthritis that will develop in his joints and the leg that has the old fracture. This is a medication that your vet can prescribe for you. Pingu takes a capsule very easily but the medication could be compounded into a liquid for ease of his owner.
• Pingu would benefit from daily joint supplements long term.
• Pingu needs to be fed a good quality cat food to help him maintain good nutrition. He is currently eating Royal Canin Sensitive food.
• A home check and a vet reference will be required before adoption will be finalised.
• Pingu's new family will need to be dedicated to his health concerns and 6 monthly vet checks will be required.
We know Pingu won't be suited to a lot of adopters, but we are positive that there is a family out there for our gorgeous boy. His medical history will be discussed in length with any potential adopters before arranging a meet and greet. ❤
