About Roxie
Adoption fee $565 includes all vet work.
Roxie: If you are looking for a dog with loads of personality, superior intelligence, outstanding athleticism, and a love for life then I'm your girl. I can be a bit timid at first (especially of men), but once comfortable I'm happy and interested in everything around me.
Carers: Officially she's listed as a' mixed breed', but just looking at her we think Roxie most likely has Red Heeler and Kelpie in her, and her behaviour supports this. She is highly intelligent, energetic, nimble, agile, stubborn and constantly looking for stimulation. When she first came to us, she was so timid she wouldn't even let me put a halter or lead on her. She still runs from the halter, but walks well on a slip lead, and would make a brilliant running partner. This bright girl prefers to learn 'in her own time--even though she'd successfully used the dog door with us holding it/showing her how, she wouldn't attempt it solo until she was alone, but had mastered it by the 3rd night. She has not ever been left alone for more than a few hours, and is clearly anxious when out of sight of her people. When bored, she will entertain herself by digging and/or chewing. She hasn't chewed anything other than the toys or bones we've supplied sofar, (ie no damage to shoes/slippers or furniture to date), and all garden excavation has been in sand only areas, digging up the bones buried by previous foster dogs--no damage to plants or lawn. Obviously a steady supply of chew toys and bones is highly recommended :)
Roxie is dog friendly (even on lead) and loves to play in the dog park, however her recall is not to be trusted yet. She was relinquished because she was exhibiting increasing resource guarding with the resident dog--we will disclose all details to any enquirer we feel is a good match. She is good with older children, but might be a bit jumpy for toddlers. For now we feel Roxie should be an only dog. While she clearly loves doggy companionship, she will need a firm pack leader and consistent boundaries to nip any behaviours in the bud, and to build her self confidence. She is not suited to a home with cats or other small animals.
Roxie would make a loyal companion for an active household familiar with working breed dogs, and willing to commit the time and energy required towards her ongoing training. We expect she would thrive from activities like Agility training, Dock Diving, or Frisbee, or anything that would keep her engaged and make use of her athleticism and intelligence. A condition of adoption will be that Roxie either continues with some sort of formal obedience training, or agility training.
