About Sebastian ~ Mastiff ~ On Trial 27/10/19
Introducing Sebastian - a beautiful and big 5.5 year old Mastiff (possibly cross Labrador). Sebastian (who also goes by the nicknames Seb and Basti ) is a happy natured boy with long legs, a thick black coat and striking amber eyes that look to you for praise (and treats!)
Sebastian loves car rides - he sticks his head out the window to allow his ears to flap in the wind. He is a big, smiley boofa who enjoys taking part in outdoor adventures - daily walks or even a jog would keep the grin on his face.
Sebastian has fabulous eye contact and is very treat focused so training is rewarding for both you and him. He sits nicely for a treat, and has good manners around his humans food. He can get distracted and forget to listen when he’s out and about (the world holds such exciting sights and smells right?!) so his future training should cover lots of fun walks, some long-lead recall training and reminders to refocus his attention on you. He loves finding and following smells so some training games involving nose-work (sniffing out treats) would be a great experience for him.
Sebastian is good with other dogs and is used to going to an off-lead dog park for play-time. He also visits the dog beach and will paddle in the shallows to cool down on a warm day. He gets excited when meeting other dogs on-lead - he thinks all dogs want to play so he’ll crouch or play-bow and then spring up barking in excitement. Due to his size and weight this can be a little daunting for others so his new family should do some lead-training in calm doggy introductions.
Sebastian has previously shared his home with other younger dogs and he was good with them and quite tolerant of their shenanigans. He’s a little older and wiser now so he prefers the company of adult, playful dogs who aren’t on the go all day long. Like us, he enjoys some down-time as well as playtime. He may suit a home with a female, adult dog or as an only dog so he gets all your attention. His favourite game is tug-o-war with a rope toy - he will lay at your feet with it or nudge you with it to tell you he wants to play.
Sebastian’s ideal home is one with a single or couple where he will be a loved companion. If your own kids have left the nest he may be a perfect candidate as your new furry best mate. He used to enjoy playing with kids , however with a new toddler in his current home he feels very uncomfortable. Due to his current discomfort of toddlers a home without young children is a must - if you have visiting friends with toddlers he needs his own separated area to chill out in peace and quiet during their visit.
Sebastian has good house manners when he’s allowed inside. Due to his current living arrangements he is predominantly outside, however we’d love a home where he can come inside to hang out with his humans. He has interacted with dog-friendly cats before and he seems to understand cat rules - he will sniff them and not be offended if he gets a whack from them .
Sebastian would love a grassy yard to play and sun himself in. He isn’t a fence jumper (he’s used to 5 foot colourbond fence), however he does know how to unlatch a gate by popping it open. So you’ll need a secure latch on your gates to stop him from exploring the local neighbourhood to sniff and say hi to everyone.
