About Duke
Duke's foster carers affectionately call him a Doofus, by which they mean easy going, lovable, and kind of goofy. Everyone he meets agrees he's a lovely dog. We think he is Bloodhound X Black Labrador, not just because of his looks, but because of his behaviour traits.
Duke doesn't bark when people come to the door, or at noises in the yard, but he can be very vocal when he wants to 'talk' to you--and bays like a Bloodhound. He's very gentle when he takes treats from you, but keep a hand towel close by, as he drools prodigiously when food is involved. He isn't destructive (he doesn't dig or chew things he's not supposed to), but he has powerful jaws and can destroy a stuffed toy in 5 minutes or a large marrow bone in less than a day. He doesn't shed, and LOVES being groomed. You'll have trouble staying away from his velvety soft ears and jowls. Duke has a doona he drags around with him and sucks on like a baby. At 50+kg he doesn't have a mean bone in his body, but he's had little training, and has no idea of his own size or strength.
Duke was relinquished to SAFE Goldfields through no fault of his own. His owners simply didn't have the time or finances to take care of such a large dog. In addition, he required specialist surgery to repair a ruptured cruciate ligament--surgery that wasn't available in Kalgoolie. Duke was driven to Perth, where he's now had his surgery, and will remain in foster care for his rehab and until he's adopted.
It's already been a long journey for Duke, but he's endured it all like a champ. He was in pain for months before finally getting his surgery here in mid June. Now post surgery his exercise must still be strictly monitored to ensure the joint heals correctly. His staples are now out, and he is finally allowed outside the house/yard for short walks. We believe he's dog friendly, but won't be able to introduce him to any playmates until after his 8 week post-surgery x rays in mid August. His foster carers are going to start him on sniffer dog training in the coming weeks.
If you love big, friendly, goofy dogs, come meet Duke--he's the best :)
